Anyone worried about engine updates next year?

I remember being excited to get my 2006 e90 330i, only to be upset the very next year when they upgraded to the new 335 with the turbo/ increased HP. Any chance his will happen with the F30? I plan on getting an M-sport 335 but willing to wait a year in anticipation of engine upgrades.

There will always be a better car in the future, if you're unsure, just lease the car or take it to Dinan.

For other markets 330i wasn't upgraded as 335i is a separate grade above the 330i.
There won't be any upgrades for N20 for at least 2-3 yrs as it's a new engine. The N55 may get power increase not far in the future.

I'm absolutely counting on it. It will only be a few more months before we can place orders for the 2013s and I can certainly wait a few more months...

The N20 makes significantly more hp per liter, so I wouldn't be surprised if the N55 was bumped to 320-330hp in order to differentiate it better from the 328.

No doubt it's coming- both the E46 and E90 had engine changes before the LCI.

But next (MY13) year?

Don't count on it. Waaaay too soon considering production starts in 4.5 months for these and if there was a change we would already know about it.

I would put even money down on MY14 or possibly 15'. But I expect the bump to be more significant than 20HP- especially considering the MY14 M3 sedan will have @450.

Expect 330-340HP with quite possibly the same tri-turbo setup the new M3 will be getting....

I think the N20 is set for at least the next year. there might be a small bump (315/330) to the N55 over the next year, but not so sure.

This is the beautiful thing about turbo motors... both the N20 and N55 have tuning capabilities which increase power tremendously over stock... if there is an update; you can make an update yourself as well for no more than $500. Cobb will begin work on the N55 AP soon making flashing yourself incredibly easy.

Its going to be big business for places that get the 320i like Canada

The 320i has a N20 thats 99% the same as the 328i N20
Same piston, block, turbos, intake, cams ect ect
Basically just a software difference

I believe a new set of 6 Cylinder turbo engines will come out in the next year or so

3 new turbo engine variants were expected a while ago
2 have appeared

1) The N13 4 cylinder Turbo shared by .16i and .18i cars ( eg 118i and 318i)

2) the N20 4 Cylinder turbo shared by .20i and .28i cars ( eg 320i and 328i )

The N55 was around before BMW started talking about the new turbo engines.
They mentioned 4 and 6 cylinder turbo engines that would share parts.
The 328i is also way to close to the 335i in performance

So I believe a new line of 6 Cylinder turbo engines will emerge soon.
The question is what model will it be launched with ? The new Coupe ?

But just like the E90 330i was kept in markets outside the USA the N55 335i may stay in production , but not for the USA. The USA will get the new top model instead.

The upgrade is already released in the guise of the 640i and the upcoming 640GC, which bumps up the power to 320hp/450nm. The only question is when the 3er and 5er will get it.

Seriously? So a simple tune would make a 320i into a 328i? Than who would buy a 328i LOL

May not be too simple
Mercedes has done it for years, 1 engine with 3 different power levels and people have had a hard time trying to get the low end ones running like the high end ones with non-Mercedes software.

Also remember the 328i will have higher spec and stronger drive shafts and brakes
328i will also keep its warranty while a tuned 320i will loose it

But that said, the 320i should be highly tuneable

I wouldn't be worried about the 328i, but I would be about the 335i.

Will the F31 touring introduce the new engine as well as the larger diesels in the summer/fall?

Just like the F21 3dr hatch is introducing larger and more engines for the 1er range 6 months after launch?

I remember being a bit bummed by the 335d coming out a couple of months after getting my E91 330d in Summer '06.

I agree. With anything, computers, cars, or electronics, there will always be something better, faster, or both. Don't worry about it. If you like it, buy it.

This is exactly the concern. The second year of the E46 and E90 saw significant changes to the top engines. The very same may happen here as well. There were quite a few pissed off 330 drivers.
