I believe it's the cabin A/C microfilter. I wonder if he replaced the charcoal-activated version with a (less effective) standard filter or removed it entirely? Either way that seems like an odd mod.

It's in the engine intake, not the micro filter! In the engine intake the air goes through the paper filter AND a carbon filter that is highly restrictive. We ( I have done this) just cut the carbon filter out and voila!

I also saw a mpg increase. Maybe some power increase but could be the placebo effect.
There is a DIY on the site for it. |

I did this today. Low end seems smoother/less staggered in its power delivery. While moving 70+ in 6th there is a slight increase in power.
It was definitely worth the hour it took me. It was also nice getting to know more and more about the car itself. I did the K&N Drop in + Charcoal Delete. |

I couldnt tell a difference doing it, but in theory it makes sense.
The stupid part about the whole 'charcoal filter' is that supposedly it removes impurities allowing the combustion to be cleaner. B.S. Maybe when the thing is new, but any activated charcoal filter quickly absorbs and becomes saturated with the stuff they are supposed to remove. Then they are useless. And this 'filter' is not servicable. Just dumb.

Oh, and if you do remove it. Use a very sharp blade to cut it out. I used a dremel with sanding drum to clean up the edge. Remove the MAF while doing this, and clean that whole filter housing half thoroughly before re-assembling. Its got this fine dust of charcoal that could contaminate the MAF.

Oddly enough, I was averaging 21.5 Miles to the gallon. Now I am averaging 27.8 Miles to the gallon. I've driven the car roughly 500 miles since I did the delete.
If anything, I am exceptionally happy about that. And Cyba Scoops are next. If not for performance, I love the way they look. |

Eh, I've reset my counter many times. I have NEVER had more than 24mpg. Not even close. Additionally, I have driven 500 miles, with air conditioning, in the city, and on the highway and am averaging over 27mpg after the delete.

Either way, they (generally) will not filter and then release again, they're very good adsorbers. The filter would have to be pretty full to be able to release back into the engine again. Most of the time, carbon filters are one-time-use because they're not designed to take and release, they're designed to only adsorb until full, and then replace. Hence why people say it's stupid that we've got a one-time-use filter in our intakes that isn't serviceable other than replacing the entire intake box. I suspect that the removal of the filter has an impact based solely on it being a restrictive filter, and the older it is, the more crap that is in it and stays in it, since again, it's not going to release the particles it's captured until it's more or less entirely full.

This is the mod you do when you want to smell the diesel fumes of the truck in front of you.

Activated charcoal certainly does hold on to pollutants. You have to have a thermal reactivation to release the crap that it holds onto. You arnt going to get that in the air filter box. And at a rate of 3L of air every other revolution, there is ~3600L of air flowing past it at 60mph in 1mile. Its not going to last long as an 'emissions device'

Why would you smell the diesel fumes of the truck in front of you if you remove the carbon filter on the intake to the engine? Cabin air has a totally separate air intake system, rough and carbon filters, of it's own.
