handling of the E90 on the autocross

http://www.moutons.org/sccasolo/Lists/2006/stockc.html

check the list,

some of the rankings

335 is in the F stock class
non turbo e90's are in D stock

it's interesting to see the cars that the SCCA thinks have comparable performance on an autocross track.

The bump to FStock is not because of weight..it is because of horsepower.

Generally, in my experiences with SCCA Solo II, the higher the letter, the slower the course times. The quickest autocross cars were A, B, C and Superstock. For instance, on an autocross course, the Integra Type R (D Stock) would blow the socks off the 280ZX Turbo (F Stock).

Yeah..something is wacky...Porsches are in AStock. So they think a 328 can beat a 335 at the autocross.. NOT.

BTW, I got third place in CSP in my 2000 Audi S4 back in the SF Region back in 2000. I moved up to Street Mod and found real competition. Yikes.

Well actually, I beat a 335i Coupe with my 325i at our last autocross. Both cars are completely stock. OK, so it was the first time the 335i driver had autocrossed this car, but he wasn't new to autocrossing.

But yes, all things considered equal, surely the 335i should be in a faster class for SCCA purposes.

the other thing to consider, is on a tight course, the extra HP may be less help than the extra weight is a detriment.

either way, it's close enough that the better driver, in either car will win

hell, a good driver in a CRX will lay waste to many cars that you'd never guess he'd beat

I don't think the E90 has a prayer against the ITR. Talk about understeer The wheel width stagger hurts a lot on such a heavy car, the front tires just aren't sufficient in my opinion

I would take a 335i over any stock 330, 328 or 325. The 335i is capable of keeping up with E46 M3's even without LSD. Bragging on the car, not myself, I have not lost to a stock E46 M3 in two races. I am not an expert, many people could get that performance out of it.

It just seems odd to me that the 335 is classed below the rest of the E9x lineup.

FS isn't a patsy class. It has high hp cars that lack lsd - which is a big disadvantage in autox. I also disagree that classes cascade down from SS, AS, BS, etc. It has more to do with cars, holdovers and where things fit.

Example: The G35 sedan is DS, the G35 coupe is FS. The cars have the same motor and driveline (other than shortened chassis).

Looking at national tour times (as opposed to local times, where there are inconsistent driver performances) confirm that it isn't a waterfall from A on down.

I'm looking forward to taking the 335 for a spin around the cones after I put another 975 miles on it (I'm at 25 now . Maybe I can find a little fun run session and compare my CSP-classed Miata.
