I think in most cases the quality of the car comes down to its engineering and design rather then where it is built. THe Mercedes ML (like the US Z3) was designed as an afterthought for the USA market so not much design or QC was put into it. So i'd definatly put my finger on the E90 being better in quality. I'm probably one of the biggest benz fanboys there are but unfortunatly the quality of their cars has really slipped in recent years

My ex 2002 Z3 2.2 Sports Edition was built in USA. (zero problems except bad interior rattlings perhaps due to its M3 suspensions and 245 rear tires)
My ex 2001 E320 W210 was built in Germany (bought new but it came with a air conditioning problem (not cold enough) only discovered 2 years later, and virtually zero problems) My C55 AMG W203 RHD was built in South Africa (the AMG block is built in Germany) - numerous problems some were common to both Germany made and SA made My coming E90 330i will be assembled in SA - the dealer said the parts are made in Germany and shipped to SA. By the time I receive my E90, I will be the one who owns two SA made top brand German cars

Yeah, I knew about that Nik, but I meant how do they differentiate which one is which...like are models from Jan made in Germany, Feb in SA, March in Germany, April in SA, and so on? Is there some kind of way of finding this out? Or maybe someone brought this up before on the forum?

and others make many different vehicles. As far as how many from where, they probably just have a set amount to make, I'm sure E90Fleet will know.

My wife has a current model C180K. Compared to the previous C180, it is a fantastic car for the base C Class. It compares just as well as my e90 compares to my old e46 323.
The Merc is 2 1/2 years old and has not had any issues. Well built and drives very well indeed. By that I mean 100% reliability. Switch it on and it goes day in day out. No squeeks or rattles, no unusual noises. We are very happy with the build quality of the car. So from our experience, both companies build terrific cars. I am just a one eyed BMW fan.

I believe all RHDs are assembled in SA. So, Asia, England will get SA made E90's regardless. Except, if you go Japan (RHD country) and see a LHD E90, don't be surprise , because Japanese like to choose LHD for imported cars so their cars can be recognised as 'import'. LHD has better resell values too in Japan.

I had one Benz and that was more then enough to loose me as a customer forever. The car was nothing but problems. But what I have gathered there are two types on Benz buyers the first one is the brand loyal buyer that keeps buying them even if they get a bad one and then the one time buyer like myself that got screwed with a lemon.

My wife has had 2 MB's (SLK and CLK). Her SLK was solid save for problems with condensation on rear brake light bulbs causing problems. Her CLK had to have it's transmission module replaced. I've found with MB some models are more reliable than others, or they appear so.
You guys remember when Canadian assembled US cars were though to have better reliability than those assembled in the US? I think the biggest difference between US and say German autoworkers, is that US workers/society do not afford much pride/respect for what they do hence the mindset for doing great work isn't there. |
