Dealership story: Do I not have every right to be mad?

Hey guys, I've seen this covered before, but I'm just beside myself. I got an oil change last week and asked them to take a look at my beat up BMW steering wheel emblem and rock chipped fog lights. They ordered the parts and I went to get them installed today. The fogs are still to arrive, but they put the airbag with a new emblem. 10 minute job as I watched them. Then I see them take off with my car and disappear for like 35 minutes. Turns out after I repeatedly *on every visit* ask them NOT to wash my car they did this time. The service manager wrote it on the work order and highlighted it as he always does, yet those idiot 17 year old careless kids still washed it.

After I told the Service Manager he looked over it and apologized. I know it wasn't his fault, but that's so frustrating. I paid loads of money to have it professionally detailed and I take so much care of the cars finish for them to just swirl it all up.

I know there's worse things in life and other things to worry about, but what a FML moment. What I would do to never have to set foot in a dealership again.

This ever happen to anyone else?

There are more important things to get mad, having an extra car wash isn't one of them...

Very understandable responses. I too have a busy life and a family which I care for more than a car, but it's the carelessness of others that shocks me.

Happened to me as well the first time I took it to service, told SA not to wash it and she had it on the order paper (I had actually applied a few layers of sealant and was still curing)... and when I picked it up, it was washed. I was annoyed, she apologized... oh well, things could be worse.

Now I have several printouts that say "DO NOT WASH" in my glove box that I put up whenever I take it service. Problem solved.

I thought about that, but I didn't want to come off as anal. Learned my lesson.

if there are swirls or scratches you have damages and they should make you whole again.

dealers are an ass about things when they have things on their side, you have things on your side this time, feel free to be an ass back.

No problem here. I tape one 3 x 5 card stating DO NOT WASH on the steering wheel emblem, one in the middle of the drivers side window facing out, and one taped over the start button. It's also noted on the work order.

So far so good.

Life is too short to remain angry at such an inconsequential incident. OP, if the swirls are that bad from their improper washing techniques, you can always re-polish the car. However, if they caused major damage/defects, then maybe discuss the issue with one of the managers. Just my .02....

There is something you could do to avoid this tragedy. You could stop driving on the highway to avoid rock chips on your lights and you could stop being a careless slob that beats up his steering wheel. Or you could stop bothering your dealer with having wear and tear covered under warranty. Or am I wrong, was this customer pay? Bet it wasn't...

the way i read it, was that the OP had just paid to have the car professionally detailed before the dealer did their bucket/brush job.

I agree, I don't want the dealership to be washing my car. And that's a right I have as an owner. I also see some of your points, but when he explicitly told them to NOT wash it - and they do? That's frustrating.

Yea, I did. And have followed strict washing procedures for them not to return. So that's my money and work to have them not follow instructions and mess it all up. I mean come on it was the service manager who even wrote and highlighted "no wash".

Yet this retard still comes in here, calls me a careless slob and sides with them. Wtf?! By the way the emblem was pitted when I bought the car and the rock chips are causing condensation to come through. WHY ON EARTH would I not have them replaced under my warranty? What is the point of a warranty?

hey if bmw couldn't design an emblem that could be replaced without having to replace the entire airbag, that is on them.

Considering that your dealer actually replaced your chipped fog light housing and a "beat up steering wheel emblem", I would be pretty grateful. Many dealers would tell you to hit the road if you tried to get those things covered under warranty. Doesn't matter if the fog light is now condensating. That's like you running over a nail and then telling the dealer to warranty the tire since it is now leaking air.

To help prevent this from happening again...just sit in the car as they perform service.

Just chill in the back seat so there is no way they can "disappear" with the car. When they attempt to swing through the car wash...you pull out the wire and strangle the driver.

Yeah I agree, washing the car isn't necessarily the end of the world, and the guy apologized. That comment was funny about the 1st world country.....

Was it under warranty or did you pay?

Warranty. Search it. Many have gotten that stuff replaced. I bought the CPO that way.
