Found out my bumper was previously repainted
When I purchased my CPO 335 in April of this year I was told it had never been in an accident and saw the car fax report stating it had never been in an accident or had body work done. The paint on the bumper under the passenger headlight started to bubble and I had it looked at while it was in for service. It was determined by BMW of Fort Myers (not the dealer where I bought the car) that the bumper had been previously repainted. Is there any way to have the original dealer pay for these repairs since they are from a previous repair that I didn't know of. Or even a way to try to find out where the work was done since it should be guaranteed?
Thanks. ps. I have contacted the dealership where the car was purchased and have not yet heard back, its been 2 days. |

Unless you never park a car on the street or in a public lot, any car with miles on it will probably have bumper damage. In most cities, park by feel is a given. I would not be surprised or worried about a bumper repaint if there is no other evidence of damage. Go to a body shop or indy mechanic with a paint thickness guage and have them check around the area. If nothing repainted but the bumper skin, then try to get it fixed as a goodwill gesture under CPO. If there is new damage since you bought it, probably best to just forget the whole thing.

From my understanding, bmw dealers do repaint front bumpers on all of their pre-owned certified vehicles before being put out on their lot. Another thing, if damages are no greater than $500, the dealer does not have to tell you about the damages and it wouldn't be traceable on a Carfax report in accordance with the law.

Repainting bumpers on CPO cars is normal.
Fronts usually have rock chips, rear may have scratches/dings. This almost always does not mean the car was in an accident or 'wrecked'. If the bumper WAS in a collision, even a minor one, it would need to be replaced anyway, not resprayed. Our plastic bumpers will only flex back from the most minor of collisions. One the plastic is bent beyond a certain point, it will crease or fold. A heat gun will push it out to a good 95% back to original, but it would still be fairly noticeable that it was dented. |

its done on most pre-owned cars at reputable dealers... they dont strip the previous paint, just spray over which causes paint to peel in 12 months time. Thats how they get that new car look that gets them top dollars on a pre-owned car.

When I purchased mine at CPO, I noticed that the rear bumper was not glossy so I had them fix it. Not sure if they repainted or just replaced the rear but it was nice and shiny.

my rear bumper had been repainted, but they were very upfront about this and we both signed a disclosure form so that if I ever go to sell the car and someone runs a paint meter over it I can show that it was done with OEM paint etc. by a dealership or who they contract bodywork out to. ALWAYS ask about this with CPO. Or find someone with a paint meter.

In my case at least they did not repaint the front bumper as part of the CPO process. Mine had rock chips and such and it even stated it on the CPO document where the tech evaluates the car.

Anyone who buys a CPO car should expect any repainted bumpers not to have issues for the first few years. If it does, most dealers should be willing to cover re-painting.
If they don't, write a letter to the owner/manager.

Also, it could be the previous owner had a minor fender bender that went unreported. It's impossible to know if the dealer really knew about it, or if it was done by the PO. I would take the car in and talk to your SA in person and see what they can do, but don't be so quick to accuse them of trying to hide something from you. |

Though I have yet to buy a used car....based on my experience with my new cars....if I were to buy used, I would actually prefer a few minor blemishes from normal wear and tear such as rock chips. Then you know it's not just OEM paint, but the parts underneath are the ones that came from the factory crash free.
A super clean car with high mileage would be a dead giveaway that something more has happened to it....but a bumper respray would be the least of my worries and a relief if it were true! It's nothing major. |

Im sure its nothing major its just annoying because now the paint is peeling so I'm either going to have to spend way to much money on getting the bumper resprayed again, or I am going to have to just live with it, Id rather it be a scratch that has a better chance of getting buffed out.

find the dealer that had it painted, find out who they use to turn their cars around, a lot of paint manufacturers have a warranty (PPG for example), take it up with bodyshop.

maybe he's telling the truth, it wasn't in an accident, but probably after a few years of rock chips and crap - they repainted the bumper.

From what I can tell your car is black, which makes rock chips extremely obvious on the bumper and hood. I bought my car from a non-bmw dealer and requested the bumper be repainted because of the amount of rock chips. If it's just the bumper that was repainted and everything else seems fine I wouldn't worry about it.

I bought an e90 a few weeks ago. It had some scratches on the on the right rear panel so the dealership repainted that along with touching up the bumpers and other spots that I requested. Now I don't know if this is technically part of the CPO process, but it's very common to have some paint on the car without it being in an accident.
As for your chipping problem, definitely go complain to your dealer. There's nobody else to help. |
