Engine Malfunction - first sign of HPFP issues?
Purchased a CPO 2008 e90 335i just before Thanksgiving, had just under 31k on it and has about 750 more since then. Filled up with gas this evening and about 2 minutes later after some mild acceleration from 10 to 35mph on a surface street I got the below error. Pulled over and looked up the issue on my iPhone here at e90post and saw that it was safe to drive home (then realized it said the same on screen). I had reached where I was headed though, so I parked the car and went inside, came back out 5 minutes later and the car started up without the engine malfunction error icon anymore and it seemed to accelerate normally. I'll be contacting Sterling BMW in the morning to see if I can bring it in, I'll keep this updated in case it turns out to be something unusual.

That could be. Another symptom is long cranks (2-4 seconds) at start up. That's what happened to me.

The cause was a inlet camshaft sensor was defective so they replaced it - Fault 2A7C.
iDrive was flickering a bit, turns out that it needed a software update "CCC Update" is what they wrote. Didn't notice it, but my rear cup holder was defective (you'd push it in and then it should spring out, but mine just stayed in) so they replaced that as well. Got great service at Sterling BMW in Newport Beach, Josh Deason was my service adviser. |

Since I took it in 8 months ago, the engine malfunction notification and reduced power output issue has remained.
I brought it in again to Sterling BMW in March 2012, and they said it wasn't throwing any faults, but the vacuum line was disconnected so they reconnected it. Problem still remained, so a month ago I brought it into Crevier BMW and they said it wasn't throwing any faults (fixed the broken vent handle though) when they tested it, so they didn't do anything. Engine malfunction has occurred 3 times in the last week, so I am bringing it back to Crevier again in 2 hours. The issue appears to only happen after the car has been started, stopped, and then re-started (could be anywhere from a few minutes, like filling up with gas, to 30 minutes afterwards, like grabbing a bite to eat), and then I accelerate while driving 20-35mph... fortunately nothing at high speeds. To cure it, I just turn off the car and turn it on again.

So I brought it into Crevier BMW and picked it up on 7/19/12. They said it was the same 2A7C fault code, as well as 3100.
Notes are: "Found FC: 3100 & 2A7C. 3100 occured because of 2A7C. 2A7C is for variable camshaft timing control. Intake. Cold start. Performed Vanos test plan. First checked wiring connection. Connections OK at camshaft sensor and Vanos solenoid valve. Secondly, checked sensor activation with IMIB. Sensor activation is good. A square wave was displayed when throttle was pushed. Next, checked both Vanos solenoid valves functionality. Both Vanos solenoid valves are OK. Therefore, the problem lies in the engine timing, intake camshaft or intake bearing strip. Continued Vanos test plan and checked timing. Timing was OK. Finally, as per test plan removed intake cam and inspected rectangular compression ring of the camshaft to see if it has dug into the bearing strip. Bearing dug a deep groove into the bearing strip. It is defective and as per test plan R/R intake camshaft and intake bearing strip. Diag Code: D1130-00000000-09-110. Re-assembled vehicle and cleared fault memory. Test drove vehicle, all systems good." For over a month it drove fine. However a couple weeks ago my wife (we share the car) said after she made a series of errands the engine malfunction light came on again and it had reduced engine power. It didn't happen again until just yesterday after I drove for about 15 minutes, went into a gas station to fill up, started it back up again and after pulling out of the gas station under medium acceleration I got the engine malfunction notice. We have around 43k miles on it and it's an '08. I first thought it could've been an electrical issue, and the original warranty is up this November so I was pretty concerned it could be an electrical issue (which don't seem to be covered under CPO), however because of what was found by Crevier BMW last time it appears it's a mechanical issue which seems that it'll still be covered by the CPO after the original warranty. However I just want it to be fixed, and I find it really odd it keeps failing after a month or so... any recommendations on what I could suggest to the dealer when I bring it in next time? Or will they keep on having to replace the intake camshaft after the bearing digs a groove into the bearing strip?

That means the engine is going to fall out of your car and you are completely screwed
