n54 to n55 x impressions

I dropped my 09 335i car off at the dealer this morning for servicing and to my surprise my loaner was a 2011 335 xdrive. Never thought they would send me off in something better than i dropped off. The only two bad things is its an auto and has 2 extra doors. But anyways i was amazed at the difference in performance. Almost feels like how my 09 does with my cobb. I also like hearing the DV a little when i ease off the gas. If i didnt already purchase all my bolt-ons for the n54, i think i would trade up to a 2011. Anyone else feel the same way?

So you're saying the N55 feels faster than N54? I feel the opposite.

You realize from a stop it will be a lot quicker due to the x-drive, and slower afterwards due to the x-drive.

I actually had the same loaner just a few days ago and was really trying to notice differences between the two engines, but honestly couldn't tell. The acceleration felt the same and I was trying through all gears. One thing I did notice was my n54 was a lot louder on cold startups than the n55 and I even unplugged the exhaust actuator from the trunk of the loaner. And my car is stock too.

Modding a loaner (unplugging the exhaust actuator)...that's awesome.

I have several dealers loan a car that's an upgrade from what I'm getting serviced.
They want you to trade-up! Nice mod on the loaner!

This is kinda off topic but could the dealer see if I unplugged the actuator and if so, would it do anything to my warranty?

That will throw a code that the dealer can see but should not be a big deal unless the dealer is a dick

From what I've read, if you got a coupe, it will sound better. If you have the sedan, it will change the sound but not as good as the coupe. Try it and you be the judge. If you don't like it, just reconnect the plug.

Yeah i drew the same conclusion after i drove it a bit longer. The auto transmission is not half bad either. The paddle shifting is kind of neat, but i digress im not a family man yet. Ill stick to the 6 speed.

Ok i admit i was talking out of my ass a bit, but the x drive makes a big difference. I still believe stock for stock the n55 is faster and feels smoother.

If you don't want the code thrown up, get under the left hand exhaust tip and identify a rubber hose that is plugged onto an actuator on the exhaust pipe. Pull this hose off and bung it up with a bolt, golf tee or something similar, then tuck the hose away in the bumper. This will stop the exhaust flap closing on start up & up to 4000rpm where it usually opens again. It will now be open all the time and IMO sounds great in comparison to stock .

Personally I like the idea that back in 07-10 BMW had 4 CATS and two turbos on the car, for no other reason but from an engineering standpoint. I understand that removing 3 CATS and one turbo saved BMW a boatload of money, but the thing is they didn't pass it on to the buyer. So that's just me, 07-10 > 11+

Car makers will never pass on the savings to us consumers, they will not make extra money for the top executives that way. Just think they are now making 4.5 mil a year now instead of 3.9 due to the cut in production cost. To make it seem like we are getting something better they toss a few more ponies into the engine to justify the 5k price increase. In reality we all know the car was making that power to begin with anyways. Capitalism at its finest and it works cause im sold.

I'm sure they could see it but I've taken my car to the dealer dozens of times and they have never said anything about it. You will be fine if you do it.

A lot quicker? Slower? .1-.2 seconds is a lot quicker? This is with 4000 rpm clutch dump. Both cars top speed is governed at the same speed.

Well I'm coming from an awd STi to a RWD 335i so yes those .2 seconds make or brake your traffic light 0-30 mph races with racers/ricers.
