Looking for some info on the E39 M5.
Mods please dont move as your e39 section is not working.
I always liked the e39 but iam looking for a project car now. Iam looking for one in the 10k-15k range. As much as i know the e39 has a big v8 and 400hp lol. Other then that as far as details go i dont know much about it. The e39 seems like the perfect car to fill my love for v8's and bmw's. Iam looking for current/previous owners of the e39 m5 that know the in and outs about the car and what i should look into before buying. Also the pros and cons of supercharging these puppies. Thanks for the info guys,Jon

M5
What a car!! There is an article in either this or last months BMW Car Club Magazine about a gentleman who tells the story of owning one. We have a guy in our chapter that has one. It looks brand new. I'm probably not far off from saying the person who owns this car may be as or more obsessive than we are about their cars. From what I gathered they are pretty expensive to maintain properly. My dealership had one on the floor. I believe it had a V10. They are a beast for sure. Good Luck.

2 of my friends recently bought used e39 m5's as "projects" and have not stopped raving about how great they are - neither of them really knew what to look for when buying, but both cars have not shown signs of significant problems

An out-of-warranty E39 M5 is going to be VERY expensive to maintain - parts are high-priced and a lot of the maintenance requires special BMW tools and a highly-trained technician. All that, and they literally "eat" tires. If you have the money to support the habit, they're extremely great cars. When I was at F40 Motorsports ("Chasing Classic Cars") in Portland, CT. in October, they had an extremely clean silver/black one for $25K. You might check their website, but there wasn't anything this car needed. I think it had 70K miles on it.

Our shop is going to have a blue one for sale soon. It's had rod bearings already done, new MAFs, along with several other things and we're currently having the vanos unit rebuilt. It has 137K on it and will be priced in your price range.
If you are interested I'll contact you once Vanos unit is back in it. |

Spent 2 days at VIR in one. Wonderful car. Drove like a car half it's size/weight. For each session, I kept forgetting to turn the DTC off. Dad crashed and died in it a few weeks after that.

10-15 will get you a high milage m5.
they are pretty quick considering how much they weigh. but blowing a high milage m5 might see some problems. just considering if the m5 was driven to hell. But solid car and still a great looking car. |

E39 M5 FOR THE MOTHERFUCKING WIN.
but like a couple others have said, be prepared for maintenance and upkeeping costs. it's not the purchase price of these cars that are tough on people, its the ownership costs. anyone can drop 20g's on a used M5. not anyone can afford to keep one though. |

I don't know a lot of technical info but the e39 M5s but I think they are the best looking M5 to date. There is member in here who is a good friend of mine that bought one not too long ago, his username is cr2596, shoot him a PM.

Ive owned a Le Mans blue 2001 M5 with 20k miles, Only issues were MAF sensors, very expensive.. and some other sensors like crank position sensor. Wish I didnt have to sell it!! Handled great and still miss it. Would buy another if I had a garage!

Wish I could get one. There's one clean black one sitting outside my apartment for the past couple of a days. looks to be almost stock, except exhaust tips at least and got a sticker on the back heh

These engines will ALWAYS ask for something new every week. They love to be touched and repaired. Sensors all over the place will keep failing on you too. o2 sensors and seatbelt sensors especially.
