328i Starting problems
Hi all, I have a little problem with my e92 coupe. Up until now the car has been bulletproof. Now, when starting the car it takes a while to crank (3-4 seconds) before it starts. As i left school this afternoon i pushed the start button, and it died while turning over. On the second attempt it started, but not as it should have. The car has also been idling quite low lately in neutral (550 rpm's). Any input would be appreciated, thanks for your time guys!

My first guess would be bad gas/fuel filter. Try running a can of seafoam or techroline through with a quarter tank.
Does it run or start any different when warm? |

It runs fine, if i drive it for 10 minutes or an hour it still does the same thing on start up. long crank, and today it died on me. I've had the problem for about two months, it seems as if its getting progressively worse.

Battery
Measure the voltage on the battery and/or get a load test.
Also look at the glass eye on the battery . Green good , black low charge or bad , yellow defiantly bad. If this started with the weather going cold its a good indication the battery is weak. If the battery reads below 12 volts its time for a new one. If you let the car sit around a lot its bad for the battery . These cars are always sucking some power out of the battery even when parked . Most people with 06 's are starting to replace there batterys now. Unless they live in a hot environment where the lifetime is 3 to 4 years. If you have a low amp trickle charger try charging the battery. Have you been keeping up on the other maintenance items ? And I don't mean according to the lifetime fluids 15k oil change schedule. Last edited by ctuna; 12-14-2011 at 12:22 AM.. |

Cold weather decreases battery performance so if you're on your original battery and it's cold where you are, I would bet it's that.

I'm an '07 328i could I explain this to the dealer and say I want a new battery, I'm still on CPO and maintenance warranty.
After a few days of no starting on a cold day my car gets a faint start but comes to life a second a later. |

CPO doesn't cover battery replacement.

Had an OBD scan done, no codes stored. The only time an engine light came on was for an evap related issue. I believe that was the gas cap. Do you guys think its a fuel pu p related problem? because it looks identical to the hpfp issue, but 328i does not have hpfp.

Try measuring the battery voltage
Slow cranks will begin long before you will get a low battery indication.
Try putting it on a trickle charger see if it helps. Did you even look at the glass eye on the battery? There are three people on here telling you to look at the battery . At least go through the steps to eliminate it. I thought the OBD would give you a battery voltage readout if the engine is not running. Last edited by ctuna; 12-15-2011 at 12:56 AM.. |

I should be right in the center
I should be right in the center length wise and closer to the inner fender
wall . A cheap 4 digit voltmeter would could also tell you something about the condition of the battery. There were some pictures of the eye in the DIY battery replacement procedure . http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...ry+replacement If you go through the pictures you can see it. If you draw a line between the two terminals its just about in the middle of the battery along that line. In the DIY the battery distribution block is black and kind of half covers it in the DIY. With the red plastic distribution block on my car is clearly visible. Last edited by ctuna; 12-15-2011 at 02:08 AM.. |
