If you had to choose...porsche vs 335i?

this is a hypothetical question

i was thinking, why would anyone want a regular carerra vs a 335i.

carerra 82k MSRP. 350hp 0-60 in 4.6 seconds and pulls a 1G on a skid pad (or close) and 60-0 in 105 feet.

the 335i starts at 40k has 300hp 0-60 in 4.8(car & driver 07')-5.2 seconds pulls .91+G on skid pad. 60-0 in 109 feet. also seats 4 comfortably.

is the porsche really worth 40k more? i can understand a carerra S and a turbo but a base carerra? Am i crazy to think the 335i is a bargain? plus we all know what the 335i has potential of. besides reliability.

why would you get the porsche? or do you agree?

I am new here. Spent the last few years over at 6speed before I got rid of my '01 Carrera and got my '07 335i Coupe over the weekend. So your question is not hypothetical at all. I found myself in love with the idea of the 996 more than the actual car, so I said goodbye. And by the way the 996 was 296hp up until 2002.

911 is in different class. its not just about magazine numbers. its also classic, 3 is not.

same as asking why would anyone want 335i when STI or Evo can rape it, has 4 doors and is more reliable and cheaper

how is 911 in a different class? maybe "price range" . 911 and sti's are in different classes, but m3 and 911? same class. and 335i is comparable to m3.

3 series is not a classic? okay bud.

your second comment has no value because 335i also has 4 doors and sti's and evos does not have luxury amenities that the 335i offers. like a comfortable ride.

mustang gt will rape a base carerra but did i ask that? NO.

911's are not carved out of steel by the God's. They come with their own problems.

335i is half price....

Lol

I would buy 335i +10K on mods.

If you don't like to mod cars...

Then GT-R is your choice.

Well, always be my choice. But I can't afford it now.

+1

The GT-R rocks

The issue with this thread is your connotation. It sounds if you are ripping the 335. I know you do not mean it, but I would edit your post to prevent flaming.

There are definitely some reasons for getting a base 911 over a 335i (in no particular order):

1. Status
2. Driving experience/feel
3. Handling
4. Track durability
5. History

911's are a blast to drive. The 335 is a little too practical when you compare the two. 2 335's for the price of 1 Carrera is still better (and thats before you get the Carrera close to 100k with options)

because sometimes 0-60 times and skidpad g-forces arent everything that defines a car purchase.

Have owned 4 "911's"...2 turbo, 2 NA...now a 335i
They are completely different animals and hard to really compare the 2. Depends on what / how you intend to use the car IMO

Most of the 9XX series Porsches are great track cars, but has anyone tried driving them every day in every day traffic with every day potholes on the every day roads with every day people? That's why most owners would rather drive them on weekends when the traffic is nonexistent and they could have some fun on the road without having to worry about jams or accidents. And how does the Porsche feel every day with the track tuned (read: stiff) suspension over every day rutted roads? You will probably need a chiropractor to re-align you after a week's worth of jarring.

Imagine hitting deep potholes with your BMW RFTs every few miles and you will understand the jarring one could experience driving a finely-tuned track car that is marketed for daily driver duties....uhhhh, I don't think so...

LOL...335/M3 are pretty civilized in comparison, with more functionality as daily drivers capable of occasional track use in the 335i case. M3s are beasts on the track, but have adjustable suspension settings to soften the daily drive.

OBTW, HP is not the only driving force for purchasing a sports vehicle. Though some may be low in the HP/TQ category compared to BMWs, Porsches are also much lighter, thus more agile in the performance category.

Don't let pure HP deceive you; it doesn't always equate to more performance capability.

So, if I had to choose...I'd rather have.....BOTH!

335i as my DD and Porsche for the weekends!

7. True sports car
8. Won't see kids driving the same looking car
9. Still a LOT cheaper than any exotic alternative
10. Unfortunately, way overrated for what you actually get

Don't like the appearance of the 996. But the 997 is nice looking. If you earn $250k a year, go for the 911. Don't think you'll regret owning one. But yea, the base Carrera, while nice, isn't anything that special. I would save up for an S. I don't like the 4s or turbo.

no 911 for me, I always need two cars and couldn't afford a 911 and a SUV. A rwd car with sport pkg. and another vehicle for most of the winter. $50k 335 and a $20k SUV. having the pair is so nice. And if I need to sell the jeep and put winters on the 335, I have that option.

I would say the 335i is more dependable from a drive train point of view due to the motor design of the Porsche (pistons and cylinders bolted to a split case design)
