Repair question

Hey guys
Ok, I took my car in for the valve adjuster tick I mentioned in the metallic tick thread (I complained about the noise several times in warranty and now that I am out of warranty, they diagnose it correctly and expect me to pay.) I have called BMWNA to come to the rescue and I am awaiting their phone call. Anyway, the service center told me that I have a leak in my valve head cover gasket. Whether or not this is true, they are asking for $800 to do this job while they are taking care of my valve adjusters. $800 is better than most dealer estimates for this job but I have one problem; $800 for what???!!!

The gasket plus nuts and bolts is like 100 or 150 from BMW last time I checked. My scammy senses kick in with the labor. Every professional German auto specialist I have talked to says that, during the valve lifter replacement, the valve head gasket is removed anyway. They say its right there, exposed, that you can take it out and waive it above your head and put it back DURING the valve adjuster replacement job. So, my question is, where are they getting the $700 labor charge?? From what I have deduced, simply unwrapping the gasket from the wrapper is about the only labor involved for this job. I mean I understand a $250 or $300 charge for the gasket...that is fine...but it is a real shame to have to take the car somewhere else to get the gasket done even though it is going to be RIGHT THERE when they do the valve adjusters...that is to say IF my gasket actually needs to be replaced in the first place because part of me believes they are just trying to get an extra fix tacked onto another fix to charge me more money. I just took my car to a professional a month or two ago (who is very good) and he checked my car out and said nothing of a leaky valve head cover gasket. Anyway...what are your opinions? Am I wrong in remarking on how easy it is to replace while doing the valve lifters? I am also praying that BMWNA takes care of the valve lifters because the bill for that is pretty fat and that is all I need as a soon to be college graduate...thanks y'all

Someone from Mississippi help this guy do a DIY. Sounds like the stealership is trying to do the run around on this guy.

For any opinions. I have the ticking sound too. I've been searching this forum for a long time and people tried self-diagnosing and also had shops/dealerships diagnosing and there seems to be no
CLEAR-CUT fix to this issue. Observe/Research and read some more and participate in the forum to get better input in your particular situation.

Only visible leak I have on mine is from the oil filter housing on the N52. I doubt it's coming from there though. It definitely is a valve issue though

The dealer should not charge you any extra to replace the valve cover gasket. The valve cover gasket is ALWAYS replaced whenever the valve cover is removed; it is standard procedure. It should already be included in the price to repair the ticking lifters.

Thanks... I have followed and read up on this extensively. This situation just sounds fishy to me.

I frickin knew it! thanks Eninty. I knew they were trying to get two jobs out of one. I can't wait to get my car back from the thieves as soon as possible. Harsh words yes but I mean....they kind of are.

I need to have my valve cover gasket replaced as well. I think I will have them put new spark plugs in too. Think this would be the same situation where they would want to charge me twice?
