What is Virginia tax on cars?

Anyone know what the sales tax for automobiles is in Virginia and what should I expect to pay for licensing in VA? I'm pretty new to the state so I don't know. I was told by a Maryland dealer that the tax was 3.2% for VA.

Sales tax on a new car is approx 3.07%-based off sales price of car. Registration runs anywhere from 35-70$ depending if you want 1 or 2 year plates. County stickers are required and usually run $25 or so for the year. You do pay personal property tax each year, but it has been reduced by about 75% since it's inception. Look to pay about $350-400 year??? for a new 325i--(can someone in VA tell me if this is correct) It is based on the book value of your vehicle . . .i.e, the older it gets, the less you pay. Also, you have to get the car inspected each year. . .another $20.

Do you have to pay the property tax up front whenyou purchase the car? I thought you do that later on...on your own.

NO, you pay the property tax the next year that you own the car. You only pay sales tax when you initially buy the car. . .

Thanks, wolke9! You've been helpful. I'm just trying to figure out what my "out the door price" should be before I start negotiating.
