MPG stays unchanged?!
Hi people...
I dont have I-drive, and always have miles to pump gas as my main dash screen . but nowdays i am interested at the MPG consumption and started to have that as main screen but interestingly, it stays at 21.1 for a long long time...and i am pretty sure i drove over at least a tank of gas since i started to pay attention to the MPG number...my questions are, is this a malfunction?? how often does this number supposed to be changing? for example, over and average the period of every 20, 50 or 100 miles?? sorry if this is in the manual, and thanks in advance.

Do you reset after every fill-up? With my current BMWs, the MPG average reflects the most change after reset/fill-up then stays pretty static as you are driving within your MPG range (your city & highway driving ratios). Unless you change something drastic (like drive on track for an extended period that has a very low MPG over a long time period), mathematically you will maintain a tighter range as time increases.

The reason it isn't changing is because it is calculating the average since the last time it was reset (which is never). This is your average mileage since new.

thanks, jaws..
u mean we cant reset it by ourselves?? i found a reset option under one of the categories.. but i think that's just how u want the unit to be displayed.. for example, miles vs kilometers...

The reset in the menu refers to the calculation, not the units -- push reset, and you'll see.
Actually, if you drive away with the BC displayed, you'll see the mpg average jump all over as it chases the instantaneous value.

Exactly! The more you drive without resetting, the longer the average is since reset. Overtime, your MPG will be static as mentioned without resetting periodically.
I always reset after every fill-up to see how my driving has changed. I usually see significant changes when AC is on for the summer/fall and when I go to the track. Most times, the differences between fill-ups are just noise.

Go press on the right knob and scroll to BC and clear the MPG calculation. It should start over.

It should be the one you use to flip between the screens. Just go to the screen you want and than hold it until it flashes "--". Then it will reset. You will see it pretty quickly. Should only take a couple of seconds to do. By the way you can also reset average miles per hour this same way.

It continually amazes me that some people buy a $40K+ car and don't know what features they have and can do with it. I guess they just want to drive and drive and drive.

Ironically, if you used the CC once in awhile on long distrance drives. Your gas mileage might not be stuck on 21.1 anymore. You'll actually see it change and go up most likely.

Eggroll, you might want to sit down with your owner's manual for a little while. The BC is really a great function, and very informative. It's easy to set and reset. I play around with it almost daily.

Maybe for another thread, but I was orignially annoyed by BMW's way of doing cruise control -- during a long trip where I had to follow a (non-CC) truck, the up/down toggle came in very handy and made driving more enjoyable. It probably also help my mileage, since I wasn't constantly moving the gas pedal.
