Mileage consumed during regular service?

Just dropped off my car to a local dealer for regular oil change service.

When I picked up the car, the check-out mileage showed 36 miles more than check-in. The report does include a service item like "ROAD TEST". I can feel that the brake becomes more sensitive than before. Looks they did something on the brake.

But I am still wondering that "36 miles" for regular service sounds normal or not reasonable? should I question the SA ?

Some dealerships routinely use customer's cars for personal use. Check and see if you got any freebies, I got a nice set of (though I don't wear other people's stuff) Oakley frames, musta cost the tech $400 (a whole week's pay). So when I got my car back with 270 miles on it, I let them know about the glasses which I decided I would keep, along with a 1 rating on the dealership. So yes, if you feel it's too many miles, why not let them know?

36 miles added on after an oil change? Yes, that's far too many miles. I might understand if you had a error on your iDrive/dash and they had to diagnosis the car and try to replicate it, but even then 36 miles would probably still be too much.

This is another reason why you should try to schedule with a recommended SA and tech.

Ah I drive by the dealer and they were doing donuts in my car. I figured if I do them it doesn't matter if they do

270 miles is too much! How many days did the dealership keep your car, and why did they have it for so long?

LOL they had it for like 17 business days, or nearly 3 1/2 weeks. But you get the point, it could not have racked up 270 miles by just sitting at the dealership waiting for parts or BMWNA to approve stuff.

It was a PUMA case for the infamous N54 stalling...

I never had a dealership put milage on my car but I did have a valet parking service at the baltimore marriott put 53 miles on my 3000GT VR4 about 10 years ago.

I was pissed!!!

I like the idea of taking a picture of the odometer - I am going to do that now instead of just remembering the odometer reading.

I left my car for two weeks with BMW Taiwan. When I came back, they had 10 trips logged which may have been legitimate as they needed to diagnose and fix a coil pack failure. However, they had disconnected by GPS blackbox camera that would have recorded all their shenanigans while "testing" the car. Not a happy camper. And to top it off, they left so little fuel in the tank I barely made it to the gas station.

I always take a picture of my odo when I take my car in for service. I do not trust dealers much less their techs to take care of my car. If its over 10 miles, I ask the SA what the dealio is.

Are you sure they didn't write down the mileage wrongly at check in or out?

Like it it's 36,430 and they just put 36,400. But it checks out at 36,436 and was only 6 miles in reality.. Just a theory.

I think for a regular oil change, anything more than 3 miles is a little suspicious.

No, not this way.

They write exact numbers on report:
Check-in: [30451 mls]
Check-out: [30487 mls].
