07 335i black soot ALL over rear (with pics)

My Alpine White 335i accumulates a significant amount of black soot over the entire rear end of the car - bumper, trunk, taillights, and quarter panels. The car is daily driven (easy), always filled with 93 and the oil is changed at regular intervals. The accumulation happens under normal driving conditions. The car was purchased certified pre-owened last year and the local BMW dealer said it's normal.

I am going to start doing performance work to the car I and just wanted to make sure this is not something that needs to be addressed or will likely be a bigger issue in the future. Thanks.

ahaha Rookie. That's the typically the most dirty spot on the e9x. The whole car might look clean, but the rear of it is a mess.... it's absolutely nothing to worry about.

My white M3 gets dirty like that. It's just dust that gets flung around in the turbulent air behind the car and static electricity makes it stick.

One of the reasons I picked gray for my daily driver. That and the lack of many color choices for the 335d series. Grrrrr

I thought it was road dirt at first but I have another car in white which never accumulates this on the rear, and my friend's 135i never has black dirt on it and we drive on the same roads. This happens within about 20 minutes of driving after I wash the car so I figured it had to be from the exhaust.

It's the airflow behind the car. The same thing happens with fine dust you encounter on the road. One little stretch of fine dust on an unsealed road - time to wash.

It's high time we get repellant self healing nano paint.

its the stagnation point for the air flow around the car.

I have the same problem on my gray e92. My work is 6 miles from home and when I get there every morning, a layer of that soot is on my bumper as well.

When the bumper is waxed, I can at least blow the soot right after off. I usually use a quick detailer to clean it off when i get home in the evenings.
