Oil Spray for Winter? Worth it?

Hey guys, got a quick question. This will be the first time i will be driving my car through a harsh Canadian winter. I was wondering if oil spraying my car for protection against salt is common and if you would recommend it. I've heard many guys argue that it is a good investment it, others not so much. Thanks in advance for the input! (I plan on keeping my car for many years to come)

Bad, bad, bad idea. These aftermarket treatments were designed long before modern rustproofing and will actually trap moisture between the metal bits it is intending to protect and the treatment.

In addition, the use of aftermarket rustproofing may actually void any factory warranty on rust through.

Wash your underbody periodically and you'll be fine.

Rust Check is pretty good. I used to do it on a 76 Marquis and the car was mint up until about 2002 when I stopped doing it. It then rusted out very badly under the car. Rust Check does not trap water or moisture like other sprays/rust proofing does. However, I believe BMW galvanizes their cars so I would not get it done. I also use Rust Check on my wife's 2009 Focus since it is not galvanized but I have never done it on my 2001 VW Passat which is galvanized and I have never had a problem with rust on my VW. The car still looks mint top and bottom.

If you really want to protect your car get a cheap used car for the winter and put your BMW away. The salt that comes off those salt trucks on the 401, QEW and 407 does a mess on your paint job in terms of stone chips in the spring.

I am doing it this year, but I will be asking them not to bore holes in it.

With our winters and salt being used most places its a good idea. Its ok if ppl are in a place where they dont allow salt. With my old car I wash it periodically but rust still slowly creeping in about 8 yrs old, mind you it was a Jap car. Acura RSX-S

+1.

Wash undercarriage the best you can and know that the strength and resistance of modern steel products will outweigh the risk of trapping moisture with aftermarket treatments.

+2 don't do it, on modern cars it will do more harm than good!

And that is what those spray on coating are good for - older boats that rusted away even without salt.

The clear bra another poster mentioned is also a good idea.
