High Mileage E90 335 drinking oil
Hi, my 07 335xi has 72K on it and is starting to go through a quart of oil every 1000k miles. My SA put dye in the engine to trace the leak but has found nothing and is giving up (your car is performing to spec, we topped it off blah blah blah). Is it common for older high mileage 335's to do this?
Thank god for the extended warranty. |

If your not leaking it, my guess is your burning it. Any burnt oil smell when you come to a stop? Blue smoke coming from the exhaust? It's gotta be going somewhere!!?!

I put one quart of oil every 3,000 miles or so which is more than normal. I perform my oil changes at 6,000 miles so to add a quart of oil in between is very normal, especially for a turbo engine. My car has got 60,000 miles. My 4.2L V8 in my S4 drank about the same amount of oil as well.
My G35, on the other had, drank one quart of oil ever 600 miles, and Infiniti said it was normal. |

Okay, maybe not high miles but I've always felt BMW's which are out of warranty have a higher probability for mechanical/electrical failures compared to Japanese cars (which is why I bought the warranty).
Purely anecdotal of course. |

1 qt per 1k miles is within the normal spec, unfortunately. Now if it just started suddenly doing this, something has changed. Most BMW engines show consistent oil useage or lack thereof over their lifetimes. Sad for some, a few of them are oil burners right from the get-go.
I remember people complaining about high oil consumption on E36 M3, and BMW telling them over 800 miles per quart was "normal". I used to add a quart about every 3K miles on the M3. On the 335i, it's a quart low between 5 and 6 thousand miles. If this is fairly new, then something is broke. If it's been doing it a long time, probably need to live with it. |

do you have any leak coming from the oil filter housing? Check it.

I just recently purchased a 07 325i with 72k. I've only had for 2 months but the oil light did light up and the system is asking for a quart as well.
I want to clarify above. The oil light indicator turns on when I remove key. I've read the replies here and would like to know if this is normal? No oil leaks on driveway. No blue smoke. Please advise. |

oil consumption
In a modern car with catalytic converters, you are not likely going to see the tell tale sign of blue smoke until it is using a significant amount. If you want to see if it is burning oil, then floor it at night with another car close behind you. If their headlights get blurred out then it is likely burning oil.
Be glad they aren't like the old cars in the 50's and 60's that you had to check the oil level every time you filled up, which was quite often with big v-8's. |

...uhhh....'cuz it beats standing?
J/K... I had a '78 VW Scirocco that burned oil every 500 miles...VW said it was "normal"...so I traded it in for my tire eating Toyota Tercel that looked like a Peugeot until I traded that in for a 213K mile/12-year affair with my old '82 Honda Accord hatchback...prior to the 335i. I put about 3 quarts of oil over 56K miles on my e90 335i, especially after a BMWCCA run with club members...(Skyline, Pie Run) when putting much stress on tranny and engine trying to keep up with the M3s...LOL!

Want to experience TRUE oil consumption? - Buy '00 E39 M5. Never changed oil on that car...no need to as you are adding oil every two weeks.

I'm not lying, here's how it went down. It was close to a quart of oil each 600 miles. I bought the car, and right before buying it (a week or two before) the car went in to get an oil change and a general check up. I buy the car and two fills ups later, I decided to check my oil. Take the dipstick out and boom, it's dry. I added then a quart and a half. So I went to Infiniti and knowing that the VQ35DE engine drank oil they have this 2,500 mile program where every 600 miles you go in and they add oil and take it down to see how much it's drinking. So I went ahead and did it. They said that it had to drink over a quart, per 600 miles, for it to be replaced. I was right under a quart, by like a couple of mL. It didn't drank a WHOLE quart but basically, if in between oil changes I wouldn't add oil, it would be dry be the time I get to do the oil change. They said it was WITHIN SPECS for the car. If it drank oil a little more they would have replaced it but the engine was fairly new so I guess a couple of thousand miles later it would've gotten replaced because it would've started drinking more but I saw their sheet and indeed I was in their chart of "acceptable consumption" back then. So nah, it's not a lie... The engine had about 40k miles. I sold that POS of G35 a week later and got an S4. Even went back to the Infiniti dealership to show them the new car hahaha... |

Now that you mention it, Mobil One 0W40 is what I've been using especially since Amazon sells it for $6/quart. I think the Castrol for BMW-LL01 spec is the 0w30. Maybe I should try that and see if it makes a difference.
On the bright side, once in a while the dealer throws me a bone and gives me a 535 for a loaner. |

The indicator turns on when you remove the key but if you look at the system messages, it will be there until you top off. If you have iDrive, just go into maintenance and you'll see all the alerts that have not been addressed. As far as if it's normal I'm still researching.
