arco gas

Have filled up Arco gas twice (91 oct) since I've had my 335i. Both times gave me the half engine light and limp mode. Turn off car and turn back on and the light went away... Never again arco gas for me... never had any issues with shell or chevron.

All gas stations get their gas from local distributors. Perhaps you got a bad batch of gas or didn't follow the cardinal rule of buying gas.

Buy gas only from clean, well cared for stations. If they don't take care of their station will they take care of their tanks?

Buy gas only from busy stations. That assures "fresh" gas and reduces the likelihood of getting "bad" gas.

Don't buy gas if the tank is being filled. That stirs up contaminants from the bottom of the tank.

Both arcos were actually very clean and very busy, both right off of major highways. I filled up about a third of a tank both times. I've been to dirty and unclean shells and chevrons, but never ever had a single problem... The only problems I've ever had was from filling up from acro those 2 times. I really don't think it takes a scientist to figure that one out.

edit: I live in an area where you WONT find any arco that isn't super clean or busy since they are always the cheapest.

Buy gas from Top-Tier gas stations. Arco isn't one of them!!

I don't go to those places.. but I'll agree that most of the ppl here like to put lots of clout into what they "believe" to be true or told is true from profit companies... I've been told you will ruin your HPFP if you consistently drive with a empty gas tank... I rarely fill more than 1/2 tank and don't usually go back to get gas until well after the 2nd gas chime (31 miles)... 58k mi never had a HPFP go out

It's a proven fact that some gas companies use more ethanol in their gas than others

There was a study published a year or two ago, and ARCO was the worst offender by far in over-diluting their gas with ethanol.

It's probably the local stations doing it, but I am among the crowd that NEVER buys from ARCO for my BMW.

United Oil FTW!

just kidding. major gas companies that are slightly more expensive have reasons why they charge more. it may not be much but they probably pays attention to getting the best batch from distributors.

I admit, ive been putting (no arco though) some cheap oil, like UTO, but ill put some shell next week and post if i feel any difference.

31 mpg?

how do you measure 1/2 a tank when filling? there is no accurate way to measure this...you could reset your odometer...get like 160 miles and be @ 5 gal or 6 gal and the difference is like 5mpg...

he meant 31 miles to go on remaining gas (hence the second chime after 'LOW' chime.)

Our cars are direct injection.... aka the detergents in Shell, BP, etc don't do jack on our intake valves. Now some say they have detergents that stay active after combustion which might be valid.

I use 93 octane costco gas exclusively, still on first fuel pump after 40k miles, put in some chevron injector cleaner bi yearly, and the car purrs like it's new. Dealer did some preventative software updates but I'm one of the few lucky ones I guess.

And yes Shell, BP, Mobile, etc all get the gas from the same tanks. It's their detergents that make them notable.... which many will argue do jack squat for direct injection.

my 2 cents

Agree i have learned that even when using top tier gas like Shell..which is all i use..u still need to run a bottle of techron every 6 months..so why would u chance using cheapo gas..sorry just doesnt make sense to do that..and for what to save a $2-3..

Your fuel system is built to withstand fuel, but anything could use a cleaning.

Each one of us knows the amount of soot on our bumpers and tailpipes.

all the companies could use a better burning fuel...
without going to 15% ethanol, or stripping the fuel, or more expensive.

Sort of like running Falken 452s when you could run Michelin or Pirelli?

I've had some problems with arco gas before. I try not to buy it unless it's very inconvenient to avoid (out of gas sitting in an arco station )
