XI to I

I have an XI was wondering if anyone took off the tcase and called it an I or is much more complicated then that? I did a very minimal search but came up empty the reason I ask is my tcase seems to be going out and cant dish out the money for a new one.... I also prefer rwd that is after the winters of course...

So you want to make your XI rear-wheel-drive? I would guess it's much more complicated than modification to the transfer case, if you want to retain all the BMW computer stuff.

Specific to your question, I'm not sure if you can just remove the transfer case and be ok. I would guess no, but that's not based on anything e90-specific.

Well, if you do it here's what you'll need to do, and there may be more than this yet:
A longer drive shaft to the rear diff.
Get rid of the drive shaft to the front diff.
Cap off the front diff (but make sure you still have oil in it).
Do a whole bunch of coding and reprogramming to the computer. Think of all the systems that use the awd system (engine management, traction control, etc)
Probably want to drop the suspension.

All of this would cost a lot more than replacing the tcase. You'd be much better off getting a used one and doing a diy repair. If you can't do that, then trade the car in (if you can't afford to fix it that is). Shouldn't this be the type of thing covered by warranty?

mechanically, yes that would technically make your car RWD if no power is being sent to the front. electronically, i'm sure the car will freak out and things wont work right.

yes, it would be better to trade your car in for (or sell it private) a I. it would be a mechanical puzzle to correctly make that mod.

There's a ton of used transfer cases on car-part.com for under $400. At least a dozen under $300.

How do you know your transfer case is starting to go out? What are the symptoms?
