Rear Wheel Bearing on 2006 325XI
I have a right rear bearing making some noise and I hear that the bearings come pressed into the hubs and you just replace the whole hub. Here on Realoem.com I can see it seperate.
HERE Do I need the hub, or can I just get the bearing pressed in the hub at a shop? thanks

I watched the youtube video of the guy changing out his bearings and figured I could do it also. Well the tools I had did not work because the bearing was seized inside the hub and the whole thing needed to be replaced. I ended up taking it to a shop and let them deal with it. I just didn't have the right tools for the job, so I passed on doing it myself.

Rear wheel bearings require a set of special press/pull tools to replace. You cannot just do it with typical home tools. The hub must be pulled out of the bearing, the bearing pulled out of the upright, new bearing pressed in, and hub pressed into the new bearing. All are a tight press fit - probably in the neighborhood of 2-4 tons force required to pull and press parts out and back in. If you press on the wrong parts of the bearing when installing the bearing or hub, you can damage the brand new bearing instantly.
A shop should charge between 2.5-3.5 hours of labor, depending on which side for a 325/328/330.

I watched a similar video on YouTube, the guy made it look easy with the rigged set-up he had (pvc pipe, pulley puller, a few spacers, etc...) but to James' comment; I would be scared to damage the new bearing because of th tight fit.
I'm going to attempt to do my front left just because it comes already pressed in the hub. Let you know how it goes. |
