Spring rate, or spring length?

BMW wants to maintain more or less the same ride height across the 328i, 335i, and 335d models. These cars weigh 3362, 3593, and 3825 pounds, respectively. BMW can keep the height consistent by using different spring rates in each model, or by using different spring lengths, or a mixture of both.

What do you suppose BMW does? Vary spring rate, or spring length?

The reason I'm wondering about this is I'm trying to find a factory compatible front spring that's as close to 160 lbs/in as possible. The 335i front spring is about 145, and the BMW Performance spring is about 195.

If the heavier cars use heavier rate springs, then the 335d spring could be as much as 155, and that's a way for me to get close to my target.

It's plus or minus 10 mm between examples, but I don't think there's a significant difference between 328i and 335i models.

There may have been an increase in ride height in 08, but that would have been across the e9x model line.

I doubt the 15 pound difference is even noticeable between sport and the160 you're after. Many I'm wrong, I dunno.

Hey man, I read your message and decided to reply here. I dont think we ever resolved the ride height variance with the Perf Pack springs. There seemed to be no consistency. Regardless of the label on the spring, some people were higher, some lower. The only sort of consistent thing was that manual cars got D3s while Autos got D4 up front. I think most if not all got D4s in back. Its been so long though that I really recall anymore.

Thanks Fraggy. I wonder if the discrepancies had anything to do with which upper mount each person was using. Illogik says the ZSP mount is 0.5" taller than the non-sport mount.

What do you mean by taller (the mount) in the ZSP. I have been researching this myself because I have a E91 328xi and trying to mate it with ZSP springs. I have been finding mixed messages on this board whether 335i (auto) springs on my 328xi wagon will increase or decrease the gap in the front end. Very confusing.

Illogik reported that switching from the non-sport guide support to the sport guide support increased his ride height by 0.5". I agree it's confusing. Of course many people don't think to change guide supports when changing to ZSP or other springs, which means -- if the sport is taller -- those with non-sport will see lower ride heights than others on the same springs.

as far as different springs being different lengths, I do know that rear E92 springs are shorter than rear E90 springs. The E92 springs are about 1" shorter uncompressed, and will lower the rear of an E90 more than standard zsp. The rear E92 springs are D3, and the rear E90 ones are D4.

both the 330i and 335i front springs I saw were D7 (330 was an E90 and 335i was an E92), I think both were autos, but didn't think to verify.

Also, I saw a set of E90 328i zsp springs, and those were D5 front and D4 rear. Don't know what transmission it had though.

The performance spring comes in multiple different designations and part #s I suspect that the spring rate varies between T1 T2 T3 T4 not sure the exact science of it all but pretty sure t4 goes in heavier cars than t1. T4 might go in a 335isbimmer auto or dct loaded , T 1 in stripped 128i manual base ???
I tried t3 Front T4 rear on e91 (e91 performance springs not avail by vin ) front dropped 5mm rear dropped 15mm from sport package . -might explore coilover springs in rear only eventually to adjust 10mm higher in rear and slightly stiffer
Would be cool to see specs on each individual PS part #s

Worn out used or basically any oem e90 mount w miles on them will be significantly compressed approx 8-10 mm easily so even replacing w same part # gives 10mm lift
