changing OEM HIDs on my 330i to aftermarket HIDS

Hello e90post!
This is my first thread, sorry if it's kinda noobish, I searched a bit for what I want to do and found no results.

I own a 2006 330i and finally my factory HIDs have gone out on me (only the lowbeams).

After finding out new ballasts and bulbs are over $200 each I began to wonder if it was possible to buy a whole different aftermarket system and put it in (even if it means making a new circuit).

Has anyone else done this? Or can someone point me in the right direction

thank you very much!

EDIT: I guess I should add, a shop told me my ballasts are out. Both low beams not working, both high beams working.

Your HIDs are actually low and high beam. The projector houses one bulb and when you flick the stalk forward a sort of door opens and allows the beam to go higher and wider.

As far as replacment, any D1s bulb will work if it is just that, or check out any number of the vendor sites. New bulbs in many K varieties can be had for around $100. If it is the ballasts as well It may be another issue.

FYI the inside bulbs towards the grilles without a projector lens are actually the flash to pass bulbs. They come on briefly when you pull back on the stalk.

Is it both sides, or just one of the HIDs?

Hope that helps.

A shop told me it was my ballast and not my bulbs . You guys know a cheap ballast site? I haven't turned up anything.

However! my high beams still work (both), but both my low beams are out.

They told you this because they thought you ve got h4 or h8 type of bulb which is FAIL. Our cars have D1S type of bulb

There are too options.
1) your car has projector headlights which you need to replace the D1S bulb
2) your car has reflective headlights which doesnt have oem HID only a H7 halogen bulb

All US spec 330s had xenons standard.

It doesn't make sense that your high beams work and your low beams do not.

Our cars have 2 sets of high beams. The xenon high beams, which are activated by pushing the stalk away from you. Or halogen high beams , flash-to-pass, which are activated by pulling the stalk toward you.

The xenon high beams, like someone mentioned before, are the same as the low beam bulbs. A shutter opens to let a wider and higher beam out.

If your xenon high beams went out, your regular driving lights, xenon low beams, will also be out.
