Intake Idea

So, I have noticed that on a whole, I get a sense that most folks agree that the Mr. 5 intake (stock box, upgraded drop in, and added cone filter routed to bumper) is a great combination of keeping the very good stock set up with the extra cold air flow route for added boost from a tune. (This thread is not to debate DCI or other CAI against another, so please dont comment on other intakes than the Mr. 5 version and my suggestion below)

Now, I was wondering if there would be a easier solution that would fall in between the Mr. 5 intake and a DCI.

My idea would be to simply cut a hole in the top of the stock box with a flat filter across the hole. This would allow air to be pulled from the front CIA while letting additional air flow from the engine bay. After thinking about it, the questions and concerns popped up.

Do you think the hot air from the engine bay will negate the cooler air from outside?

Should an additional filter be placed under the whole to limit suction so the CAI would have priority under load?

Should the whole be cut on the side of the intake box like the M5 intake but with a simple cutout of a drop in filter mounted on the side.

Opions, concerns, thoughts, insults?

A hole in the top cover will let unfiltered air coming in.

If there was an injection moulded replacement for the top cover that worked with a vented, say M3-like hood, I'd buy it.

Are you saying cut a whole in the top and route a hose or something off of it to grab some cold air? Bc if so, it won't fit the top of the airbox gets really close to the hood.

Actually come to think of it won't that make it bring in unfiltered air? Isn't that why the Mr. 5 intake comes out the side?

ugh, i was looking at it wrong airflow wise. Yes, it would need a filter of sorts across the hole, either inside or outside of the box. I am unsure if there is enough clearance either way. But hole like a mr5s with simply a flat filter on the side would easily have enough space.

+1 This sounds about as good as it gets..

Truth is it would have to be custom..there would never be enough demand for an intake with such as design to fit only an M3 style bumper...too small of a client base if not all n54/n55 could fit it

But what if rain?
Also when you're going fast, the air running parallel to the opening will tend to suck air out of the intake. It's not a stagnation zone in the airflow.

I think it's a good idea! Cut a hole, put in a filter, and test it out It might be sucking in hot air DCI style, but it's increasing airflow. I'm guessing the IAT's would be slightly higher than the Mr5 style, but it's an improvement on the stock box. My guess would be the results are very similar to DCI's.

I have a dyno day on oct 3rd. Will take a look and see what options would work. If so, i only need the lid and can sell the box for someone wanting to do a mr 5 kit.

It's too bad that the area under the lid of the airbox is already after the filter. If it was before the filter we'd have more easy options to be creative, like a hood scoop that leads directly to the airbox.
