Question Poll: What do we think of the 4 series/M4 name?

Ok so what do we all think of this change? I've heard mixed opinions so just wanted to take a quick poll to see what the majority thinks.

I'll start. The 3 series as a brand is very strong and until the recent 1 series came along it was the entry model for BMW. We've always had the 3 series in the form of coupe, convertible and sedan. I think separating the models at this point is a purely business move and I think the new 4 series name is crap.

I just can't see BMW being so stupid as to change the name of their best-selling nameplate of all time. It would be like Toyota changing the name of the Camry or Chevrolet rebadging the corvette as the clipper. It's one thing to introduce a new model (i.e., the 1 series). It's something altogether different to eliminate the name of your bestselling and most popular model.

I think all the talk about the 4 series is just that: talk. Until I see or hear something official coming out of Munich I won't believe it. The 3-series is simply too iconic to delete it. Besides, there are only so many single digit numbers BMW can start naming model series' with. If 1, 6, and 8 are reserved for coupes and 5 and 7 are sedans then all you have left is 2, 3, 4 and 9. They can't really use 9 because too many Porsche models use 9.

What would BMW have to gain by ditching the 3 and stepping up to 4? It's not like the numbers actually mean anything. If BMW were to replace the 3 with the 4, then that leaves with 2 and 3 to use for future models. At some point as the 1 series grows up it only seems natural for them to return to 3, just like they returned to 6 after 15 or so years of not having a 6 series.

If BMW were to delete the 3 series and rebadge it as a 4-series, I think their customers would punish them at the bottom line. The 3-series is a legend, the 4 series is WTF? What's that?

Have you read the threads about the 4er series ... have you understood these threads?

I think not ... ... there is no deletion of the 3er series or replacement with the 4 ... the 3er series would be the best selling model also in the future ... only the coupes and the convertible gets the 4er lable!

^^^ Uli's gonna blow an artery!

It's funny how many people don't get it though, isn't it Uli? You know what is more funny? How many of these people will be buying a 4 series Gran Coupe in a few years. They'll be like "Why the hell would I buy the chunky sedan when the GC looks so much better?"

Could've sworn someone from BMW got on here and posted that it would still be the M3. Maybe even said all coupes would still be 3-series and the 4-series stuff was nonsense. I'll have to hunt for that.

I Don't care what it's called as long as it's a very capable car. I know, some people don't give a sht if they have a 4,000lb behemoth as long as it has an M3 badge.
The M division should do like Porsche don't jst build SUV's,Heavy cars etc. to cater to a certain clientele but also build something like a Porsche Cayman with a back seat that we can afford...The E36 M3 LTW.

m3 is just too classic of a name to change/kill, assuming there wont be an m3 sedan.

The 4 Series and 4 ideas are great. Should have done this years ago. It follows the BMW grand logic of odd = sedans, wagons, SAV, GT; and even = coupe, convertible, roadster, SAC.

Why have alphanumerics if they don't make sense or follow a system?

We all know the last two digits now only mean nominal displacement, not actual.

The 1 M Coupe was a huge mistake in naming...M1 would have worked just fine.

All this legacy talk is really silly to me. The M3 will live on as a Sedan, which is great. 3 Series was a Sedan long before a Coupe was created in the line.

The first 3 series was only offered as a Coupe or Convertible.

I keep reading that BMW is killing the production of the M3 sedan. Thats why I would assume it would also be ending the m3 name. If there is an m4 thats great..but if there is no m3 it would make baby tiny infant Jesus sad.

The 2002's , 2800CS, 3.0 CSL (Batmobile) etc. Are some of the most famous BMW's and were very succesful in racing.
The naming of the cars isn't very important as long as they're great cars, imo.

Oh my god ... it has been posted many times before in the E30 range there are only an sedan ( 2-door / an later also with 4-doors! ) and an convertible ... none from BMW quotes this car ever as coupe !!!
And the same case is the first 3er, the E21 ... in this range there are only an 2-door sedan and also no convertible !!!
