Here's my Mr. 5 intake setup. I finished it tonight.



I happened to have a K&N 3.5" filter in the garage so I just used it - which required a 3.5" joiner, 3.5"-3" reducer, and 3" joiner. Maybe I should have just bought a 3" filter...




I yanked the brake duct and black plastic behind the grill for airflow and fitment reasons.




it was pretty straightforward because of the great description of the original and the numerous other setups. The one question I have is about the fender brace that e92s have. I could squeeze the tubing btw it and the fender liner but it was VERY tight.

I removed the brace and am wondering about the effects. Has anyone else installed a Mr. 5 intake on an e92? WHat did you do about the brace? I'd appreciate any advice.

It mounts to the frame under the coolant hose and at the fender infront of the powersteering reservoir.

Just to let you know the brake ducts are functional on this car. I would keep it in.

You have to remove that brace for the UR and STETT CAI too.

Dude, put your car back together. Do you think those ducts and braces are there needlessly? All this for what, 5 horsepower?

Brake ducts are functional and as for the brace I have mine off and there seems to be no effects on rigidity issues of the fender

Actually I think it's closer to 20 hp and I'm not exactly sure that those items are that important just because they're on the car. For example, do you think two DVs are necessary? EGR is only for emissions. The pcv routed to your inlet only serves to gunk up your head. do you really think 4 catalytic converters are necessary for a car running 13 AFR at redline stock? How about your seatbelt reminder?

If you road course your car you will find out they do function. Otherwise I like them for those runs in mexico when your slowing down from 150

Couple Scca guys actually praised the brake ducts on 335i. Especially when compared to the 370z which had nothing. (which is what ended up having car and driver/road and track) one of those guys crashing from brake failure.

Minimal at best. A better set of open spoke lighter wheels would serve better. Than the factory brake ducts.

so in preparation for the intake i did a log of my stock car with COBB stg 1 93 octane tune. The outside temp was 78 deg that day. It was 77 deg today when I did the intake log. I did it on the same stretch of road to try an minimize differences. The logs follow.








You can see that the IATs with the intake are 15 deg cooler, boost is lower, I'm running more timing, it looks much more consistent, and the wgdc is lower indicating the turbos aren't working as hard. The throttle plate and boost are a little more erratic with the intake. That's not great but the stg1 tune is designed for a stock car and obviously the calibration isn't ideal for the improved air input capabilities.

Such a good solution. Thank you Mr. 5.

Actually the brake ducts are less than functional. They aim the air onto the tire, not the actual brakes. I left mine off on the custom intake.

I wasn't aware that e92s had an extra brace.

I would personally keep the brake duct. Even if the air is not aimed right at the rotor, I think the point is it keeps air moving through the wheelwell by displacing cooler air into it. I am not as familiar with e92s but can't you keep the brake duct but put a hole next to it for the filter? Another option would be to put a vent in the fender liner like the oil cooler. I am actually thinking about doing this.

Thanks. I meant to also write that the car does seem to pull harder in the higher gears. There might also be a slight improvement in throttle response though that's difficult to quantify.

Got the duct back in yesterday without issue. Just took a little repositioning of the filter assembly.

With the logs and othe convincing dynos and vbox numbers this has to be the best intake for the buck around. I'd like to see how it compares to dinan. I'm surprised ar or bms or cpe haven't marketed a kit or core exchange setup for this. Seems like a no brainer considering all of the testing that has already been done.

It' would be nice if they could do a Dinan type lid and piping intake made of something less expensive than carbon fiber so it would not approch the $1k mark of the Dinan intake. I'd gladly pay around 2-3 hundred for something like this.

The mph is commensurate with the rpm. I ran out of space on the run... Not sur about the humidity difference but it wasn't 10% vs. 90%. They were the same stretch of road within a couple of weeks of each other.
