Burned a quart of oil in 6,000 miles?

Yesterday, just as I pulled into a parking spot, I got a warning message saying that the oil level in my 335 e90 was at its minimum level. Yikes! I learned quickly that there is no dipstick, so I'd have to trust the computer. There was no place within walking distance that sold synthetic oil, so I drove about 1/2 a mile to the nearest Advanced Auto Parts, and put in a quart of Mobil 1 (with the recommended viscosity). Next thing I know, the oil level meter reads just shy of full.

Has anyone else experienced this with their 335? That is, burning a quart (or more) of oil at about 6,000 miles?

Also, for those of you who changed your oil before the service meter says to do so, where did you have it done? I called to make an appointment the other day at the dealership, and the service manager said that I did not need to do so, with only 6,000 miles on the clock. I brought my previous cars (WRX, Mustang GT) to Jiffy Lube, but I don't know that I want to bring my 335 there.

Yeah, no worries, burning oil is normal . My buddies 2006 325i even burned a quart 8500 miles. BMW's love to eat oil, its just part of their diet. PERFECTLY NORMAL, you think 1 quart every 6-8K is bad, go drive an E46 M3 for a year and let me know what you think then (they have been known to eat MULTIPLE QUARTS ). Just what you deal with from a performance machine.

Change your own oil, its easy. Do a on changing oil, there is a thread in here with DETAILED instructions and pics, but if your still uncomfortable, PM me and I can't walk you through it.

Yes, it's normal. As for changing your oil early, either go to a dealer (~$120), an independent BMW shop (~$90), or DIY (~$55).

Also, the little oil level graphic on your iDrive or on the computer display is only for the "last quart" of your oil. Your car holds 7 quarts. In other words, when the graph is on "halfway," it doesn't mean you are missing half your oil, just that you're down a half-quart. You don't need to add any until you're down a full quart, like you were.

Don't worry. It'll get better. My E46 quit drinking oil @ ~ 10k miles.

I'm used to checking the oil on my Jetta every 1000 miles, adding when necessary, so to add 1 quart after 6-7K miles is not surprising. I used to change my own oil but have been lazy the last few years. I think it will be time to start DIY!

Heh, Buy an RX-8, Oil Consumption for the rotary was about 1litre per 1Kmiles. No biggie.

1 litre ever 6-8k sounds like next to nothing, no worries.

Oh and I recommend changing it yourself, everything is laid out quite well, is easy to reach, and it's an excuse to spend some time under your car. It's better than time spent under the Bus.

I called VOB service about a week ago, and asked to bring the car in for an oil change. The service manager said that I didn't need to, because I didn't have enough miles on the car. I said ok, then read some threads on here about oil changes. I called up again today to make an appointment, and she said, "How many miles do you have on the car?" When I told her 6,300, she said, "BMW is not going to pay for this." I said that was fine but wanted to do it anyway. You would think that I had asked her if I could bring in a Yugo for service.

DIY...its the easiest oil change I have ever done!

I purchased the filter at Bavarian Auto Sport...or you can pick it up at your dealer.

Strange about the consumption....I have put 12 thousand miles on mine and not added one drop.

Please, check your oil and make sure you are not running DRY, and the oil sensor is not going into a sleep mode forgetting to tell you that you need to add oil -- Ohhh ehhhh well you cant there is not FREAKING DIPSTICK....

Try a quart a day with a AE3007 jet engine.

you'll probably need to fill the oil at least twice before your first scheduled oil change (about 15K mi). But I wouldn't wait that long to do an oil change.

After all the rigmarole, VOB changed the oil, and only charged me $80. I expected well over $100.

I had to top off a quart at 6k too! But BMW paid for it for free. You know that you added a quart of Mobil 1 to 5 quarts of the Castrol remaining in the engine right? Not that I know if it will make a big difference...

I just added a quart to the 335i loaner I've had for 5 days now. She gave me the idiot light at 6600 miles. My own 330xi ate a quart in the first 5000 miles; they also replaced my oil sensor at that point because I wouldn't get a consistent reading even after I added oil.

The moral of the story is, go ahead and add a quart but then check the level frequently and make sure you get a (relatively) consistent reading. If not, have your dealer look at the oil sensor.
