so some have cracked it...will the future giac solution require us shipping the dme to them? will they be able to install factory back too?

There is also the problem that with the E90 the ECU is often flashed as part of software upgrades, and dealers cannot omit that part, so any flashed ECU will be reverted back to normal if the car has a software upgrade that includes ECU software.
This has been driving E60 diesel users that flashed their ECU's crazy, since almost each time they have a software upgrade they have to go back to the tuner to get their software again.
