What tune would I need to beat a 2011 M3?

I have a 2008 335XI Sedan. My friend challenged me to a track race (not sure how long 1 lap is) with his 2011 M3 Coupe. Of course with perfect driving he would win in a long distance race. But what tunes can I modify which can beat him in about 1 lap?

I plan on getting Cobb AP. Will that be enough? I would consider myself a good driver, although he is experienced.

I am on automatic and he is on manual.

Thanks

A lot!!

I would get a tune, Intercooler,a Set of DP's and a whole hell of a lot of suspension work like an LSD, m3 bushings, sway bars and proper track tires. In other words, more than it is worth just to show you can beat your friend in one lap around a track.

This is key- assuming by track you mean a long flowing road course.

Better hope its a straight race lol...

You could take the M3 with a few big power upgrades in a straight line...but the track is a different story..This is where the M3 was made to shine...all the suspension on the M3 outshines the 335 so in a track there is really no comparison (to stock 335)..

Yea probably. If the M3 is DCT it might be closer, but that should definately win against a 6MT.

335xi have massive understeer issues that you'd have to take care of as much as possible and even then you probably won't be able to keep up. Maybe with full bolt ons, meth and awd you could accelerate out of the corners sooner and hope that'll give you a lead but I doubt it.

No way...even with all the susp bits from an M3, the 335 still won't handle as well. The M3 suspension is far better, and do not dismiss the fact that the M has more rubber under it. Also the M brakes are better, and the awd causes understeer....
Good coil overs, lots of camber, esp up front and at least brake pads and lines will help. Urethane rear subframe bushings are a great swap instead of the M3 parts, and are much easier to install. Also, and OC upgrade will be nice. If you're pushing more power that only helps straight lines, the M has more top end, than a lightly modded car at least, and won't go into limp mode when his oil temps get up. Mainly because the M oil temps won't get that hot...apples to oranges comparison really. I have all the M parts on my 1, plenty of extra power, along with shocks/springs and an LSD. Tracked it and an M3 the same day, M3 is still a totally different car and far more at home on the track....better hope your buddy can't drive, and you can :-)

+1, if you know the track like the back of your hand, it will be pretty hard to beat someone who knows the apex of every corner. Unless, of course, he has the same knowledge of the track as you.

Grassroots Motorsports did this exact article in 2010.

In order to beat a benchmark none comp package 6 speed M3.

They did
Tune - Juicebox tune + turbo control module
CCW wheels/tires- used Bridgestone RE11's, arguably the best competition autox tire made (had a lot to do with the lap times) and this eliminatesw the run flats (-4-6lbs of sprung weight there alone)
intake/air scoops
sway bars
HKS exhaust
Springs from Bimmerworld

The car dynoed 331/340 in this article.

The 335 of course, had cooling issues and heat soaked pretty bad which led to more inconsistency in lap times but none the less it could beat the M3

The Indian makes more difference than the arrow. I just got back from the track and ran a bunch of M3's down...and got run down by a bunch of M3's. I have a 6MT tuned with a Cobb AP, Stett CAI, and ER FMIC. I also have upgraded brakes so I could carry a lot more speed into the corners as my car was very predictable. In the straights, it wasn't much of a contest. In the twisties, you better know what you're doing or "all things being equal" you're going to get smoked.

+1 on all of the above.....OR.....

Rebadge a matching supercharged DCT M3 to a 335...LOL (Go to a dealership and "borrow" the target vehicle for a test drive, rebadge......)

J/K...I know one forum member who replaced the front OPEN diff for a Quaife diff to get better traction on both front and rear wheels...I don't know how it turned out, but he did it, anyway, probably in an attempt to reduce understeer so prevalent in AWD BMWs...and maybe that is the reason (Open diff up front) that they have such understeer.

1 - Race on a Cold Day
2 - Lots of driving lessons
3 - R comp tires
4 - Cooling (Oil cooler, FMIC, meth, water wetter)
5 - Suspension (coilovers, sways, control arms, bushings, ect)

Notice a Tune isn't in the top 5? You can beat a 2011 M3 with a e36 M3 or 150hp spec Miata, depends on experience and what is mentioned above. Power can be your enemy, espeically when you are not an experienced track driverand (it will also add lots of heat in our case.) Lots of people think you can just slap on a tune and beat XXX car, completely not the case. I've been spanked so many times by some beat-up spec car with less than half my HP it's not funny.
