Will a catback void my warranty?

So I just bought a 2007 e92, and I love the thing. It has an extended maintenance plan and warranty that is in effect until 2013. The dealership that I have my warranty with told me that ANY engine mods will void my warranty?!?! I really want to throw a catback on there and make it louder!

Will the warranty for the entire car be bunk with a catback? Or will they not fix anything that may be related to the new exhaust?? They were really vague and sketchy about answering my question...

Any advice on tuning my new ride is appreciated!

A cat back should not do anything to your engine warranty. I am sure others will agree. Get your exhaust and enjoy! Congrats on the car.

They will be vague because technically anything done to the engine can void the warranty. That being said, if you have a really good relationship with your SA, you stand a better chance of getting away with certain mods. My best suggestion would be to develop a really good rapport with them and feel them out.

The best of both worlds would be to get a really experienced indy who knows BMW's to do your non-warranty work and your dealership to cover the warranty items. Look around, the guy I have doing most of my work was a former BMW Master Tech that went out on his own. He's currently building me a custom exhaust that I can't wait to install.

simple. buy the cat back system. if you have a Check Engine or a Engine Malfunction take off the cat back its FBO and put stock on take into the dealership and problem solved.

simple service they shouldnt care about it.

You'd have to read the fine print on the extended warranty. Most of the time, they have to prove that your aftermarket modification had some effect on the thing that broke. If they have a case, they can deny the "claim." However, they can also specify in writing certain items that automatically void the warranty, so that's what you'd have to check.

theriz has a good point though. Just keep the stock one so you can go back to stock if anything happens!

Well that really depends on how hard ass the dealer/ SA wants to be..with that said..OP you should really try and find a "cool" dealer/ SA who will be ok w this ...they can really void your warranty or not cover expenses for any after market stuff..I learned the hard way..stealership I use to go to wouldnt cover my brake flush b/c I had stainless steel brake lines..just be cautious and do you homework

Holy crap, I've heard of some pretty lame dealerships, but that is beyond ridiculous!!! OT, the SS brake lines are such a sweet upgrade.

Thanks for all the tips guys, been trying to build rapport with my SA but frankly shes a bitch! She keeps telling me that ANY engine mods will void my warranty... lol... I definitely do not have enough know how (or funds) to uninstall parts before service... I need to try another SA.

How about the JB4? Is that pretty good at going undetected with all the code delete functions?

a female SA is just as bad as a female cop. Straight by the book, cannot comprehend why enthusiasts do what they do.

Always depends on the SA or Dealership in regards to warranty.

Less technical SA, the higher chance of rejection. Some try to blame everything on a mod. Get another SA.

You can always get the BMW performance exhaust too. Then, don't sweat it.

i hate when people say find another local dealer.... bastards! it sucks only having one local dealer and they are so inconsistent when it comes to warranty work! sometimes good, some bad... but they always throw flags on suspected mods! i almost didnt get my engine warrantied because this same SA told subaru(multiline dealer) that he could tell my sti was previously modded, which it wasnt since i had JUST bought it as a certified car! i had to trailer it 2.5hrs away where another dealer fought to fix his bad talk when he quoted "i see no reason to think this car was ever modded" and even if i did, we always give the customer the benefit of the doubt
