lean-burn maps

e90fleet,

do you think it's possible bmw would update older version 335i's ecu software in a dealership flash in the US when we get the low sulphur fuel to make use of the lean-burn maps? or would there need to be some sort of hardware update to make it work? what exactly are the benefits of the lean-burn map? just increased economy/lower emissions? thanks!

Tough question but no BMW dealer has software for that lean burn/Stratified Mixture Formation. There has to be no sulfur at all and a DeNOx catalyst may have to be installed. No BMW engine, even in Europe, with direct injectors has that lean burn map.

Where did you hear this? I just want to make sure we're talking about the same thing.

European BMW DI engines do have the lean burn maps

Thats the reason the normal DI engines arnt being released outside europe yet, because it requires the correct fuel.

The 335i had the maps removed for countries without the correct fuel, but for the smaller engines, its cheaper to just fit the uprated N52KP than fit the new DI engines without the lean burn maps.

Interesting.. here's my source saying the lean burn maps aren't out yet.
2007 Engine Technology Page 10. (unless I misunderstood it)

• Stratified Mixture Formation - In the stratified injection method, a homogeneous
mixture is only created around the area of the spark plug. A lean (inhomogeneous)
mixture exists in the rest on the combustion chamber. Therefore the overall A/F
mixture in the combustion chamber is lean (lambda > 1). This results in increased
combustion chamber temperature, and subsequently increased NOx emissions.
The increased NOx requires the use of a DeNOx catalyst which is not effective when
sulfur is present in the fuel. Therefore, sulfur free fuel must be used which is not
readily available in all markets. For the time being, BMW does not have any engines
which operate as “stratified charge” engines.

1) Thats a USA doument

2) The lean burn non-turbo engines have only been released recently as 08 models 5 Series and 1 Series and only in Europe ( others get a N52KP ).
New European 330i and 325i Convertibles also have it

The mainland europe 335i was supposed to have it since introduction as far as I know.
