Brakes locked

I was driving today then i pulled over for like 20 minutes then was about to drive off again but i realized my brakes were locked and i couldnt not do anything. I put the key in the ignition and tried to start the car but it wont start bc the brakes was locked and would not unlock. I called roadside assistance they provided me absolutely no information. they told me that they did not know what was wrong and they can send a tow truck to get me. I told them that it was ok and hanged up. then i got irrated and i slammed my brakes down and i relalized that the if i just get the brakes to budge lil bit then the car would move so i was finally able to start the car. I am wondering how was my brakes able to lock with out me doing anything?

dude, it's brakes

same thing occasionally with my car, i dont know why
if its stiff, you just have to push it in a bit just like you did, and you can start

I think that "brake" is probably one of the most misspelled words on this board

back on topic: press it harder, then you can start, no biggie

Wrapping up a bit: your brakes took a break, but then you got angry and they went back to work. Jokes aside, is it the handbrake that is triggering this problem?

Do you just mean the brake pedal was hard to push in ?

this prob was due to you pushing on the brakes before the car was running, and from the power brakes not functioning the brakes hardened the not allowing you to press down on the pedal. In other words, if you push on the brake pedal with the car off, and this goes for most cars, that if the engine is not running and your depress the pedal, each time you press the pedal it becomes harder and harder to press down.

You just followed Murphy's Law.
If it's not working, force it. If it breaks, it needed fixing anyway!

correct me if I'm wrong, but don't ATs with CA need the brake depressed to start the car?

All E90s need to press the pedal to start. Socal is right. If you keep pressing the brake pedal while the car is off, the pedal pressure will build until you can't depress the pedal far enough to allow the car to start. I've had plenty of 'no fault' cars relating to this issue, cars coming in and people complaining it wont start.

Actually all cars do that if you pump the pedal and the car is off...unless your master cylinder is shot.

shouldn't that be lack of vaccum due to the engine being off and not providing vaccum for the power brake booster?

Once the engine shuts off, you have one good full application of the brakes and I wouldn't release it until it comes to a full stop with the engine off.

this happens to me sometimes too...usually if i leave the car sitting for a long amount of time. the brake pedal becomes stiff and can only be depressed a little. but even with this little depression, you can still start it...weird..
