Rusted springs compromise spring rate?
Will rusted springs compromise the spring rate of the springs overtime?
I just installed my spring perches for my OEM sport suspension but in the process, I scratched up one of the springs like hell. A lot of the black paint is gone and I'm now worried that the spring will rust easily. Taking the spring out was the most tedious DIY I have done in my life, because the stock sport spring is very long. Lowering springs are so much easier to work with. Obviously I don't want to remove the spring again only to apply some paint, should I try to apply paint on the spring while it's still in the car? |

Yep, I agree with you. The problem with my spring is that it is scratched to the point it looks like it fell into a blender for a few seconds.
Luckily, I had some spare time in the afternoon so I just jacked up the car, and with a brush applied some black anti-rust paint to wherever I can. Of course I can't reach all of the scratched areas since the spring is still in the car, but... |

No, surface rust would not compromise spring rates. If rust is so bad as to eat away measurable thickness on the spring coils it will affect the spring rates but by then you will have much bigger problems than spring rates.
