Ipod connector question

Okay so I was thinking about getting the Ipod connector thing that goes in the center console because the aux cord by itself has static interference. But does this Ipod connector still play music through the aux cord?

Sound quality is MUCH better. I got a knockoff on amazon for around 10 or 15 bucks. Works perfect. Can't compare to just using aux, plus you can use steering wheel to scroll through your collection.

Edit: I'm referringbto the iPod cord you plug into the USB, and not that whole mounting system option.

I believe with the BMW iPod cable, the song data is transferred via the USB and the aux cable just allows the audio to play on the speakers. So the quality of the song is actually the same as it would be on your iPod.

The op is referring to the fact that the aux system on a logic7 sounds like crap with an iPod. I can confirm tgat the USB cord seriously improves iPod performance in a logic7 system. You use ipod setting instead of aux setting. Difference is huge. It's like when u use the aux there is no equalizer input and there is a lot of static.

Thanks guys that's exactly what I wanted to know. Can anyone confirm if the cord and steering wheel controls work with an iPhone 4?

Yea, I experienced that as well. I used an aux cord with my logic7 for about a day. Then when I got the iPod cable from BMW, the guy explained that the data transfers through the usb, making the quality much better. I put the "I believe" part in my post, because Im not sure if this is correct, but it makes sense that it would be. So like youre saying once you get that cable and use the Ipod setting, its so much better.

I just had a 328i loaner with the factory iPod connection. I just used the sync cable that came with my iPhone and it worked fine. Dunno why you need the BMW Y cable.

I used the only mini-plug connection at first, but only the steering wheel volume controls would work and no iPod info on the radio dial. My SA gave me a Y cable, and now I'm able to fully control the iPod through the steering wheel controls with the iPod info appearing in the radio. The Y cable will charge your iPod too, something that the mini-plugs won't do.
The only downside is that my iPod sounds like AM radio now instead of CD quality. But, this could just be my old ears.

Try using the standard iPod sync cable. Plays, charges, controls, and displays the iPod with a single cable.

Are you sure about this? I tried hooking up using my factory iPhone cord and I set the radio the the "usb" setting but nothing happened. It may have charged the phone but that was it. Am I doing something wrong?

This only works on cars new enough. There is a sticky on the changes, but I *think* it was post March '11 production cars that can just use the regular iPod/iPhone USB cable. Earlier cars need the special BMW Y cable.

The iPhone cable works just fine in my July '11 328i Touring. I did have to reboot my iPhone to get rid of crackling noises, but it has not come back in two weeks.

In order to both control and play audio from an iPod using the sync cable included with iPods, your car will have to have the combox controller. I believe this was actually included in September '10 and on builds, but definitely pre March '11 builds as my e92 is a December '10 build, has the combox controller and plays with the standard iPod cable perfectly. I think I remember hearing that the combox can be retrofitted by the dealer, may be something to look into?

Hope this helps!

Shameless plug: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=569660

In response to the guy above who said the regular iPod cable works, that only works for cars in the 2011.5 model years with the combox.

If you have to buy the OEM Y-cable, don't go to the dealership. You can get them on eBay all day long for $17-25.

That was the first thing that I tried, but didn't seem to work as you described. Next, the mini-plug, and finally success with the Y cable.

I have non I drive or logic 7. Hi-Fi I think. I got more static with a Y-cable, the BMW one that came with my car. It hooks to USB and Aux and can control songs through wheel and screen. Aux with aux-vol set to 4 or 5 depending on song and quality was best, and of course quality music and aux cable makes a difference. Length of cord does as well.
