Just finished MS-8 Install.. fried MS-8?
I just finished installing my MS-8 & amplifiers Here is the setup:
Channels: 1 --> RCA --> AMP --> FL 2 --> RCA --> AMP --> FR 3 --> RCA --> AMP --> FLW 4 --> RCA --> AMP --> FRW 5 --> Center 6 --> Rear Left in parallel (sides and deck) 7 --> Rear Right in parallel (sides and deck) 8 --> RCA --> AMP --> Sub Turned everything on and things powered up fine. Started doing the setup and got all the channels and crossovers done. Went into the audio diagnostic and the center & rears do not output anything (channels 5-6-7). These are the only speakers being powered by the MS-8's amp. There is also a loud buzzing noise when everything is powered up, and the amps pop really bad when they receive the initial signal. I double checked everything to find out the MS-8 is blazing hot. I couldn't even touch it. This is just after running the setup, which leads me to believe something is very wrong. I disconnected the output plug and verified the 3 channels were connected right and left it disconnected to try to setup the system with fronts and subs only using only RCA outputs. Same thing, but this time only my sub outputs any sound in diagnostic mode. Fronts did not put out a thing. Buzzing is still there and the MS-8 is hot as can be. Anything I could be doing wrong causing this ? I've worked in car audio in the past and I am fairly competent when it comes to hooking up audio systems.

Ran through everything again with the output harness disconnected. Noise and popping is gone, but the woofers and sub outputs are EXTREMELY quiet. Overall volume is very low. I had the gains set to 1/4 during calibration, turning them all the way up after calibration didnt help much. I ran the sweeps at -40 and -20db and neither seemed to do well.
advice ? MS-8 is still running hot.

What setup do you have originally?
If you have 2 ohm speakers and you're running them in parallel That's a 1 ohm load Which the ms-8 can NOT handle Do you have a multi meter? Measure the resistance on the wires going to the speakers powered by the ms-8 Thats a common fault if the amp gets very hot Don't ask me how I know

Also the with the rcas unplugged
So just the speakers powered by the ms-8 Does it still get hot? If that doesn't work then you'll have to disconnect everything And hook them up one by one till you figure out which speaker/output is causing the problem

I've had my L7 sides and rears (2 ohm) hooked up in parallel for over a year now with zero ill effects. Still, if I had to do it over again I would run them in series, since there really is no disadvantage doing that and it gives the amp a safer load.
If the MS-8 runs that hot during set-up, I would suggest it is fried. Just make sure though that you are not letting the sun shine on it, otherwise it will get that hot in a millisecond!

OK.. Buzzing is gone. I don't have the rears or center hooked up so I can at least test the other things. I ran through the setup with the amp gains set to 1/4. The woofers and sub are so quiet I cannot even hear them after setup without cranking the volume and gains to max. Even then they are not very audible.

Ran through again.. Got the levels up by running the sweeps at 3/4 amp gains and -6db on the ms-8.
During my front 2-way setup I never see the option for a hi-pass filter? Only a x-over option I set to 150db. Where do I set the high pass for the mids?

If you're sweeping with -6dB and 3/4 gain on amps and the sweeps are not destroying your speakers (or ears)... then you have a faulty unit.

I disconnected the inputs to the MS-8 and it is still feeding low level noise to the amps. Sub sits there are vibrates with nothing playing. This is depressing.

I might be screwed. I picked it up off ebay NIB, but the shop has a 7-day return policy. I contacted them stating the problems with the unit. If they will not take it I would have to go through JBL? Is that an easy process?

I know a few people who had theirs exchanged by JBL
And they were either bought off eBay or even purchased used Try with the eBay seller first If not I think if you paid by paypal, you can mail it back and paypal issues you a full refund
