DIY Poor Man's Piano Black Trim.
This is something i took on and decided to do myself since it wasnt that expensive. I purchased a damaged wood trim kit on ebay i was going to have it professionally taken care of until i got bored. This is what i did:
1) Sanded down all the gloss on the complete set of the trim this includes -left dashboard -right dash board -center console -ashtray cover -passenger side front trim -passenger side rear trim -driver side front trim -driver side rear trim 2) after all were sanded and cleaned from dust I primered with Rust-oleum sandable primer. 3) when everything was dry I prepared for painting by lightly sanding with 320 grit paper to assure that the surfaces were clean and smooth... this assures no specs and bubbles or what not. 4) This is the kicker... i have seen many people immitate the Piano Black look with metalic black or deep black but Piano black is basically lacquer black. So i went down to the ol' Home Depot and picked up some Rust-oleum Project Specific black lacquer spray paint. Gave every piece a good two coats and sure enough the surface was smooth and deep shinny black. ***** Note: Be very patient with the coats do not paint over wet layers because it wont look smooth. this paint was tricky and with black you can see every imperfection. PATIENCE!!! ***** The end result looks good but i am yet to install it since it has been raining in New Jersey for like 900 hours. I will post pics later when the sun comes out.

I'd be curious to see how this holds up against things that could scratch the surface. I always thought plastic surfaces were supposed to be prepped with adhesion promoter.

Clear coat for the deep look.. And protection... I'd give it two or three coats of clear IMO..

Looking forward to seeing this! I can't believe you managed to get a piano finish yourself (but kudos to you if you did )

You mentioned you used 320 grit after you primed.
What grit did you use to get the factory clear coat off? Did you also sand in between coats of the black?

Did you use tack cloths after sanding? If not, get some. They will pull off all of the little tiny bits of sanding dust that you can't get off any other way...you'll thank me when you're not seeing garbage in the clear coats.

Can you post some close up pics before you put them in the car? I think I may want to try this mod. If I do I am going to try with a small piece of trim first to see how well I can do it. Less I have to replace if I screw up.

ummm i think if you screw up one piece, you have to buy the entire trim set. I don't think they sell individually ... i could be wrong
