fuel pressure regulator defective/dealer joyride

My '06 325i was cranking 10-15 times recently on start when the engine was cold, so I took it to the dealer to get looked at. They replaced the fuel pressure regulator, which was defective.

The entire service experience was pleasant, and they washed the car, BUT the car had 15 more miles on the odometer than listed on the paperwork.

Mileage in/out was 9697/9699, but the odometer was 9714. My SA said that the mechanics do a test drive, but 15 miles was excessive. She'd check with the mechanic and give me a call. It's been three days and still no call.

Anyone know how extensive a test drive is needed when a fuel pressure regulator is replaced? Should I make an issue of this with dealer service manager? I just don't like the thought of someone taking my car for a joyride...

Why would a BMW Technician take a 325i for a joyride?

^^That was harsh!

rudyg: I'm sure it's nothing to be worried about, but I hear what you're saying about the joyride. They could have driven that thing more careful than you do, but it's the fact that someone else was driving it. If something fucks up in the near future, than bring that issue up and tell them how it was unresolved and you want to sue for mental anguish. lol

Ok well not really, but you get the point! :P

yeah why would a bmw tech take a 325 for a joyride anyways...it has sooooo much power i forgot!!

seriously though i am sure they could have done a couple test drives after and they probably had something go wrong and had to test it again!!! i am with you 17 miles is a little excessive...i would just tell the service manager just to be on the safe side so they have a record of this...so next time they can't be like "we have never heard of a problem with that" or make you feel like your nuts!!!

I can't get past the part where you let them wash your Black Sapphire car...

1. Remove and Replace fuel pressure regulator.
2. Attempt to start car, fires up immediately.
3. Grab the guys and head to hooters for a long lunch.
4. Prove that with high enough RPM's and a tranny drop the 325i is capable of doing doughnuts.
5. Take back to dealership and wash all rubber off car from behind rear tires.
6. Fudge paperwork
7. Return to customer with original problem solved.
8. Customer returns solid 5's on survey for a job well done!

My SA took me to lunch in an X5 and on the way back, I assumed I was going to drive. He said "sorry, can't do it, customers car in for service".

Now, the issue I see is not that they did the test drive, but the paperwork says only extra 2 miles on it, but in reality extra 15 miles. Sounds to me like it was used as a group lunch car...

Yea, I was thinking something similar. If the SA doesn't call me back, there go the 5's.

How would you feel if you took your car in with a full tank of gas and got it back with the gas warning light on 3 days later? Let me tell you I was pissed (this was my old M3) I didnt record the miles, and I had no proof that they drove it... My SA told me they had to drain the gas tank to work on the problem.. Ended up getting a free tank of gas, but never went back to that dealer.

Yeah, thats normal. For something as serious as a part that controls fuel delivery, they are gonna take it out and test it under slow, fast, etc. conditions to make sure they truly found the problem and that it was installed corrcetly. Think about it, which would you rather have, 15 extra miles on the car, or having the car given back to you and have it fail again a day later---they are just being thorough, I wouldn't worry about it.
