Wow... just amazed myself... (by accident)
So, I've never been a fan of ginormous janitor-style key ensembles, so I have always kept my car keys separate from any other misc. keys I might have.
Because of this, I've always been a fan of late model BMW keys with the fob built into the key. More recently I love, LOVE the new BMW CA keyless fob. I've found that I just stash my fob in the change pocket of my 5-pocket jeans. I don't even notice it's there and being that I don't need to take it out to enter or start it, it's quite convenient. You probably see where I'm going at this point. The downside of my little technique was that no matter how careful I was, I knew at some point it might find it's way into the laundry. Well... you guessed it. Tonight was the night! I just switched clothes from washer to dryer and there it was sitting all alone at the bottom of the tub. "Aww crap" I audibly muttered about as disappointed in myself as I could possibly be at that moment. Next stop... out to the garage. To my surprise, those lights flashed as quickly and brightly as they had when I locked it yesterday. The only difference was my fob was all shiny and new again. BRAVO! I know it's nothing amazing to build a watertight enclosure, but still... I was quite impressed and extremely pleased to not have to shell out $xxx to get a replacement. Of course I'll be more careful in the future, but it's nice to know that I could probably get away with it again if I ever have another accidental washing.

The moral of the story is never wash your jeans.
Good to know though that your fob can take a licking and keep on clicking.

LOL! I thought that too. I'm the ass here, no doubt. But it was nice that BMW picked up the slack where I failed to be responsible.

Ha! That was my dilema had it not worked right away... (inner dialogue) "Should I throw it in the dryer? Can't get any worse, right?" LOL!

Thanx awesome! lol. Usually the case with electronics is that you can drench them in water as long as they are not on. After I'm done soldering a circuit board, I usually rinse it under the faucet and then submerge it in alcohol to get the flux out But its good to know you didn't lose your fob!

OK, I'll confess... I washed mine about a week ago. SAME scenario exactly. Found it in the bottom of the washer, I just laid it in the sun on the window ledge and sure enough, works like a champ.
Glad I am not alone in this. Was all bright and shiny...

Hijacking my own thread... LOL
SROC3 -
Yeah... that is me tracking up @ Willow Springs. That shot is on the little "Horse Thief Mile" track up on the hill. WAY fun track, btw... probably the most technical in California. I usually head out with a group called Speed Ventures. Good group of guys... and girl, actually. Very knowledgable and not pompus pricks all stuck up on how fancy their car is like some groups I've tried. This one's all about having fun out on the track. Lots of driving time too compared to others. I usually even skip the last session and get a head start home. www.speedventures.com The e92 is amazing on the track btw, as the power and balance are incredible. The drawback... you guessed it... LSD, or lack thereof. Oh well... maybe time to get a quaife... or maybe just wait until the M comes out. We'll see. Either way, it's a blast. And it proves our cars are quite capable of being taken out on the track for a day of fun only to be driven safely home afterwards. On a sidenote... that particular day was a high point for me, because I had the opportunity to drive a genuine E36 M3 Lightweight with Dinan supercharger. Even though the E92 stock had a lot more power, this thing was truly amazing. A real race car. absolutely awesome.

BMW recommends HE laundry detergent if you want to get the best performance from your FOB.

OH Well there ya Go! Switched to the He last year when we got the new Maytags... That explains it. Actually it might, the new washer doesn't fill a monstrous tub full of water, it just runs water over the clothes as they are tumbled... Might explain the survival rate. Based on all the links, I'd say it's not an entirely original thing to have happen, or BMW owners have trouble focusing on details sometimes... :rocks:

Last year we drove my wife's X3 to the beach. Thinking nothing of it, we went into some awesome 6 foot waves, did this and that, all great fun.
Only to discover the X3 key fob had been in my shorts' inner mesh pocket the entire time. Dried it out in the sun, then tried it - and it worked perfectly. Didn't give us any trouble at all since. I was absolutely amazed... |
