A few (new owner) questions...
hi guys,
got a few more questions... 1. if i drive 5k a year and reach 20k in 4 years... how does bmw handle brake pad replacement... does it need to be on the wear indicator to be honored on the 4/50 free service ? 2. what is the voice of the NAV (female or male and/or simulated or sampled) ? 3. how long is the 335i clutch expected to last ? if it wears our by normal w/o abuse will they honor it within the 4/50 ? 4. I guess if i only put 5k on a year im short changing myself on the 4/50 ? ugh nothing i can do about it. thanks guys ppp |

Well if you drive the car like you stole it the 5k a year then you should be able to get at least 1 full scale service. With the car sitting most of the year you MAY have some issues with a lot of parts if the car isn't garage kept (even climate controled) and driven regularly. I personally don't think I'd ever be able to buy a car and only drive it 5k miles annually.

The only thing I can tell you is that dealers will normally change the oil annually even if the mileage isn't up to what the service indicator says.
I do have some concerns for your car diong a 3 mile commute daily. My mother had a 1.5 mile commute for 26 years, and for about 6 years, I did too. Engines get a LOT of sludge and filth built up in them driving such short distances. My mother didn't run around much, but on weekends, I'd put on 150-200 miles mixed city and highway. Even so, my engines got very nasty and I'm one of the fanatics that changes his own oil every 2K miles with Mobil 1. If possible, keep the car in a garage; and if possible, get a $500 car for the 3 mile commute! Rawhyde |

You might be better off with a 328.. But you are going to need to take a long trip once a month, I know written into the Mercedes manuals it says to drive you car for at least 30 mins strait once a month.
As for engine problems on the Mercedes ML's (could happen to any model) if you only drove a few miles a day if you would take the oil cap off it would have a peanut butter sludge on the inside of the cap.. But after a hard freeway run for a few mins the sludge would be gone. But it takes 10 miles on average to warm up your car.. So you will never be able to go WOT on your commute.. Its horrible trust me I used to have a 1 mile drive and my car would never get warmed up but of course I did a lot of weekend driving. Now I have a 20 mile drive and get to enjoy my car for half the drive.. As for brakes under normal driving you should not need new brakes until you hit 30-40k or more miles. And they wont change brakes based on age on the car its based on wear, its not something that goes bad over time like oil or gas. About the clutch... A clutch should last 60k miles easily( most cars dont need a clutch until they hit 80k miles).. If you burn your clutch up in 15k miles that might be abuse.. I know they will only give you 1 brake change in the 4 year 50k mile warranty anymore is considered abuse. |

BAH, Short Commute is no worry, just be certain to give it an Italian Tune Up once a week. I average about 3k miles a year or so, and rarely haven't had any trouble with my previous two vehicles.

Really? That's the first I've heard that. On the 06, the nav voice is always female, and the voice recognition voice (basically, the voice for everything but nav) is always male.
My input: You will drive the car more than you think. I also have a 3 mile commute to work, and I put an average of only 3000 miles per year on my previous car. With the 330i, I find reasons to drive. I head out almost every day at lunch and get some highway miles in. I'm on track for about 12,000 miles this year. I bet you will do the same. So even though you will hit 4 years before you hit 50K miles, the miles will be closer than you think.

They won't change the pads until they actually measure within replacement specs. I had ~70K on my previous M, and the brakes were still just shy of replacemet, amazingly enough. The big brakes on the M3 and 335 tend to last a while due to the large surface area of the pads, but in general, BMW dosent replace any wear based component like breaks or clutch unless they fail, throw a code, or fall within replacement specs on major service inspection. As for the clutch, my previous car needed a new clutch at ~65K miles, and it was covered under extended maintainance (paid for it's self on that one service). They replaced it upon my 1st report of minor silppage.
With your mileage, you probably won't see brake replacement for >10 years, and it will be on your dime. |

Thanks guys !
I heard comments about 20k on the brakes , so i was alittle worried I wouldnt make use of the 4/50... it sounds like they should last a resonable amount of time. my current car @15k has about 85% left on the front and 35% on the rear *shrug* only thing i can think of is the traction control activating all the time. I was concerned over the clutch because my current car has been known for a poor clutch and avg users needing to replace it around 20-30k. I will drive it like i stole it... so im not too concerned about build up sludge due to granny driving for 3m to/from work. Potty pants... hehe its from an old south park clip "prissy potty pants" people are too hung up on apperances and being "correct". thanks for the advice guys ! ppp |
