M3 335i dilemma

Hey guys,

some of you know that I started off a thread about MB vs BMW... now that I got that cleared the way, my dealer just phoned and said that 335i will be delayed once again... he said something about special order and no stock blah blah...

He also said that I might as well wait for an M3... What do you guys think?

I get to drive a 328i for the time being (sedan, not coupe) - which means less miles on my new C230...

so what do you guys think? Keep my order? or head up to the M3 range?

Money is SORT OF an issue but not really... if I dish out the money for 335i, I may consider dishing out the money for an M3...

Montego Blue or Crimson Red? 335i or M3?

the wait is longer for the M3 but is it worth it?

If money is any issue at all, I'd go 335.

Price regular maintenance items for an M car. Plugs, filters, brakes, etc. Odds are that they'll wind up costing a LOT more. I have the JCW version of the Cooper S. Spark plugs are $35 each vs $7 for a Cooper S, and the JCW air filter is $100...get the idea? How about gas mileage? The E46 M3 had quite an appetite for gas whereas the E46 330Ci and even the 335i are substantially less thirsty.

With plenty of money and low usage (like if you had a daily driver AND an M3), these wouldn't be nearly as important considerations. I've wanted an M3 ever since they first came on the scene, and I really wanted an E46; but with 110-115 miles per day being rolled up...I think it's best for me to stay out of M cars until I can afford to buy one as a toy/occasional use car.

Best of luck with your decision.

If money is not much of an issue, then I'd definately go M3. Get the car that you want. Don't wish for the car that you coulda had

are you sure money is not an issue? if it's not, then you wouldn't be asking the question

I'm sure there's quite a gap between a 335i and the yet-to-be-announced price of the new M3

For the E46, the difference between the 330i and the M3 is about 20,000 CAD

I'd get the M3 if $$$ really is no issue--but the 335i is a screamer in its own right, so you really can't go wrong either way.

If you are like me, you can well-afford either model, however your practical side is battlling your impractical side. In other words, do your really NEED an M3? Probably not, none of us NEED one. It just may be so desireable to some of us, however, that we cannot resist it, and we therefore take the leap in spite of what may be practical in order to have it. You must be prepared to spend whatever it takes to own it, however, or else you will be stressed out. You and only you know if you can truly afford it, i.e., the vehicle cost + the cost of maintenance and insurance, without ever breaking a sweat or having a second thought as you pay the bills, while at the same time loving your M3. If you are in that enviable position, then the M3 is the obvious answer.

exactly, well said by ilmor

I DO NOT REALLY NEED ONE. and when I say money is SORT OF NOT a problem, I mean that I can pay for it whole and walk away and still wont go hungry or freeze in the rain (although that wont even happen in Richmond).

As for maintenance, what isn't covered under warranty? I mean, sure that M stuff is expensive but that's after the first 4 years isn't it? I will probably be rid of the car by then and change for something else.

I am struggling with the practicality of an M3, there are lots of M3s in Richmond/Vancouver (e46 model), but you rarely see it going faster than 70-80 km/hr... simply because you can't. Traffic in Richmond sucks, lights every 2 minutes, so why waste the gas.

I am willing to put 93 octane in it, and I am ready for the insurance bills + the car, but the question is... canI use it to a quarter of its potential? Maybe, maybe not...

See, I have never owned an ///M in my life, sounds fun to own one, but... can my heart take it? I mean, I am not in my nineteens anymore, and probably I won't do 150 when the sign clearly says 50...

Still deciding... what's the count so far? I am surprised 335 has a HUGE fan base compared to the M3...

If your not already on a waiting list for a m3 (maybe you are), it's going to be awhile, which may be a factor in your decision. I'm #24 with my dealer and they tell me it might take 2 years. Maybe your area isn't quite so bad.

in Richmond, we dont have as much BMW enthusiasts, we have more MB

because the Asian ladies over here (I am asian too), love the Mercedes C280/C350/E350/S500 and so on, they also like the 323i/328i/335i/525i/530i/745i and so on

BUT they don't like the AMGs or the Ms, because they know jack about cars

oh and yes, I know we get some track days, but see, I have tried the M5, and the ride SUCKS at slow speeds... it's bumpy no matter what you do with the gearbox suspension and all that... wonder would it be the same with the M3

If the M5 is too bumpy for you, I don't think an M car is for you

only at low speeds though - and I have been in other sports cars, but just that at slow speeds.. m5 just sucked...

F430 was better... (I never drove one, just sat in one)

$20k is a lot of money! and 335i and the new M3 will be really different cars believe it or not. But if you can afford the M3 definitely go for it, you'll be our hero

Aside from the performance of an M3, the interior is head and shoulders above a non M car.
