Temp gauge at about 230-240

Hi everyone,

I noticed last night while driving that my temperature gauge was showing the temp at about 230 to 240 rather than right in the middle at 210. Is this something to be concerned about? I know with my E46, if the temp gauge wasn't right in the middle that it was most likely a problem with the thermostat. Is this something similar?

The gauge you are reading is oil...

And BMW designed the car to not open the cooling gateways for the oil until it had reached 230 (so while they do run hot, they are also designed to run hot). I have read that the oil temp is kept high to evaporate water in the system (230>boiling point of water) - but I didn't engineer it, so I cannot say for sure.

I would guess that you have an early build (prior to March 2007) 335i. The concern BMW received from customers about the oil temperature exceeding the half point on the gauge caused a redesign of the gauge. Later build cars have an oil temp gauge that reads up to 340, with 250 being the center point.

328i don't have oil temp? Only 335i has them. Are you talking about water temp?

My 2007 e90 335i runs right around 240 pretty much all the time after it's warmed up. Mine came equipped with the stock oil cooler.

Mine too! And the temp here in Vegas don't help we see 100F to 116 or so!! Normal cruising temp is 240-250 thinking of getting an AR oil cooler non-retrofit but not sure yet if it's worth it.

I think the 328 coupes get an oil temp gauge instead of the mpg meter.
