What's the REAL power output of the 335is?

Ok...this has been bugging me for a while now. We've all seen the press releases, specs on the website etc that quote the 335is's power at 320 hp.

However the Z4 SDrive 35is with the same motor rated to the same torque 332 lb ft @ 1500 rpm, max power at 5900 rpm, max rpm (7000 rpm) is rated at 335 hp. How is this possible when the torque/rpm ranges are identical for the two motors? I know BMW Marketing has tried to explain this off as due to a less restrictive intake on the Z4...but is this really true? I recall reading a press launch story on the 335is (Inside Line/BMWBlog???) that said that there was disagreement amongst the BMW personnel about the power deficit in the 335is. So that's additional fuel for the conspiracy.

Then there have been a couple of dyno charts that show the 335is having in the vicinity of 285 - 295 hp at the wheels.

A recent Roundel article on the 1M kept kept referencing the 335is as having 335 hp.

Finally, here's the last straw - this evening, I was bored and decided to take a look at the Owner's Manual for the 3 series coupe/conv (the online pdf downloaded from the BMW Owner's site) and in the technical specs section the 335is is listed as having a maximum power of...guess what...335 hp!!!

So which is it - 320 or 335? I am beginning to thing that even with BMW's conservative estimates the 335is actually has the same 335 hp rating as the Z4, but the marketing boffins intentionally peg it down to 320 hp. Is this being done to create a bigger perceived gap between the 335is and the M3?

Or am I reading too much into a bunch of typos that have cropped up here and there?

It has a thousand million horsepowers.

I think it has at least 335 based on the numbers, esp. the trap speed in the 1/4 mile.

Most likely same as the z4 35is which is 335hp.. They underrate the power to help M3's image, protect M3 owners' ego.

What's the temperature, humidity, DA, PA, octane, RPM, ect.... Are you measuring the power at the wheels or the crank? You can take the same car, dyno it on 2 different days, and get 2 very different numbers. I would say be conservative, take whatever number they tell you and subtract 15%, and that is roughly what you are seeing at the wheels.

ive seen 320hp in most places. now in terms of REAL power, i know that it is underrated and we all know that. my guess is in the realm of 350hp (so 295 at wheels)

What difference does it make man 335hp or 320hp. Bottom line is it is faster then the 335i and slower then the M3. Gaining or losing the claimed horse power number will not change that fact. You have a nice ride relax and enjoy your ride. If you want more serious power go the way of JB4.

OP is trying to set the record straight, not trying to race a 335i and an M3 side by side..............

Yeah...that must be it....insightful post of the year!

Too bad BMW is not aware of this and has the 'is' rated at 335 hp in their Tech Specs. Never mind the multiple road tests, dyno tests etc., that have the is pegged a bit quicker and with 10-20 hp more than the standard 335i.

FWIW, I was trying to point out a discrepancy that I noted in the 335is specs...and not start a 'which one is faster or mine is bigger than yours' post.

...and also I am still waiting to take delivery of my 335is...a few more days now...and hence the obsession with it. This has been a very long two months.

Look at any dyno runs done on owners' 335is-es, or take a look at official quarter mile trap speeds. The traps are good indicators of horsepower.

The difference is called software mapping. That's why you have Proceed, COBB, Dinan, GIAC, JB4, ... that can change the output of the N54 engine.

Turbo engine is the only type of engine where you can spend a couple of grand and still get substantial torque/hp increase (I called this value for $$$).

With NA engines, you can spend more than $10k and get less than 30torque/hp increases.

What a hater. Would have an "is" if he could afford one. Stop making excuses.
