Going to be a judge at a car show - need advice and opinions

Hey everyone, I was elected to be a judge at a charity event for work. It is going to be a car show that will raise money for children's education etc. The person running the car show does not want to have too many categories and does not want to break it down too much. It will very general. Domestic and Foreign classes. There will not be sub classes like Euro, lowrider, muscle car, 4x4 truck etc. Everyone is welcome and the goal is to raise the money for the kids. What I need help with is the judging. We are thinking of doing a best of show, participant's favorite (best car voted by the attendees), and a show and shine or something. And it will be best in foreign and domestic. The problem I am facing is how to judge these. Should I use a 1-10 system in certain categories like paint, body, interior, engine etc? Then add them all up at the end? I have never done this and want to be fair to everyone but need help from someone who has done this successfully before. What works and what does not? Should I have multiple judges that are responsible for specific categories? Ex: I would vote for paint and body, the next judge will vote all cars for engine, the next will vote for interior etc. Any help will be much appreciated. There will be anywhere from 50-150 cars there. Thanks!

Trophies and plaques. And we are going to have some sponsors do some giveaways. Not sure what they are going to give yet.

Just give them all the thorough eye test. Make sure they are clean, straight, paint is good, engine nice, interior clean, etc. The ones that stick out to you, write down on a pad. When it comes time to decide, go back and look at those (probably won't be many if you've done a good job preselecting). Then decide which you think is the nicest. If it is a casual charity event then you don't need to be so formal with your judging process. If it were HIN or something of that nature you made need to. Most of all, enjoy yourself, the cars, the owners, and post some pics!

Don't separate the jobs, like one guy judges all the interiors, and another the paint, because that might lead to opinionated results since only 1 person is judging each category.

And, the most important thing: have fun! (and snap some pics for a "share" thread in the photo subcategory).

I would use this as a baseline.

Simple, all cars, other than bmws, suck.

If no codes are being thrown use Chevron Techron fuel injector cleaner (concentrate). It solves rpm fluctuating upon cold start-up. Also, for most BMW problems start off by scanning your car with the Peake Research Tool. It contains the actual BMW codes. If you want to register a newly installed battery for free (just buy a $10 cable) and google/download BMWLogger

Thank you. I will probably narrow down a lot of this scoresheet though. It might take me a week to judge all the cars if I use the whole thing! haha!

Sounds fun and exciting what you're doing. I like this format mentioned above, but like you had mentioned it may be too detailed and focus for your needs. It's a very good starting point though.

One thing you did not mention, what are the typical age of the cars. If the group of cars are newer, then body fitment criteria may not be needed. It sounds like you want a simplistic scoring system.

Example:
Desirability of the car, 1-10
Exterior (clean) 1-5
Interior (clean) 1-5
Engine compartment (clean) 1-5
Overall condition of the exterior 1-10
Overall condition of the interior 1-10

For older car groups (may be added to above criteria list):
Functioning engine 1-5
Functioning electrical 1-5
Suspension 1-5
Completeness 1-10
Panel fitment (maybe) 1-10

Then, you can add and "weigh" (based on 100%) the scores to whatever scoring system you may choose. At least, this system may allow your judges to judge and move on, while the scoring each car can be somewhat thorough.

Most important, it gives the participant a solid chance of winning. I too am not keen on individual judges focused on their area of expertise. You can use a judge that can assist in appropriate value number to another judge who may be less fit to give a correct value (maybe splitting hairs here). Also, you may use judges who are experts by giving out (an example) "Best X award” from Judge Auto Builder X.

This is just my simple .02 cents on the subject. GL
