Auto-dimming mirrors

I happen to dislike the auto dimming mirrors. Can this function be disabled?

Thanks.

Good question, but I don't think so. I doubt that the circuit would have its own fuse, so it may require removing or cutting a wire at the mirror.

Be careful cutting wires -- rain sensor is also located in the mirror, so cutting power to the auto-dimming function will also disable the rain-sensing function of your mirror.

The delivery guy at my dealership mentioned something about putting a little black square of electrical tape over the sensor (which I think is somewhere near or on the rear-view mirror). Seems like a low risk solution if it works (and, if you resell the car, you won't have to solder any wires together).

Hope that helps,

-Dan

What does the rain sensor on the mirror do to the mirrors? Does the auto dim mirrors bother you that much where you would want to disable them? When i had a c230 loaner it had auto dimming side mirror and i rather enjoyed having it.

You all are weird... The Auto Dimming Mirrors are a problem how? By keeping headlights outta your eyes?

Seriously, what is wrong with the auto dimming pieces? Is there some kind of visibility concern, something you can get used too??

This makes no sense.

I appreciated having the auto-dimming function on my S4, I hope the 335's works as well. It's so nice to have when the car behind you has their high-beams on.

One of the few things I HATE about BMW is the fact that they do not let the driver decide if he wants this stuff turned on or not. Every other vehicle I have ever owned has a switch on the mirror to allow the driver to turn the function on or off.

There are several of these NUISANCES in my 330cic so I am sure there will be several in the 335ic I ordered. Can't wait to find out what they are !!!

I had 328i with ZPP for a week, and I never took to the auto-dimming mirrors. I found I was less aware of traffic around me. It's not that I couldn't see people's lights, they were just too subtle. Without auto-dimming mirrors, if a car is approaching your blind spot, it pretty much broadcasts itself by bouncing light off your mirror, and I like that.

If a really annoying car is sitting behind me for a while, I either (1) twist the little clown nose or (2) lose them

I also dislike heavy tint for the same reason.

Don't get me wrong.... I like the auto dimming function .... except when I leave my glasses somewhere and I have to resort to the sun glasses in my glove box. When that happens I just wish I could turn off the auto dimming function.

BTW - what's the story on the RAIN SENSING WIPERS. Why the hell should you have to turn them off then on to get the function to work properly ??? I would ASSUME that if you LEFT the switch in the AUTO position you would not have to turn them off then on each time you wanted to use them. Again, all other vehicles I have owned or driven work that way.

My wife's Lexus is TRULY AUTOMATIC. I fi take her car into the car wash I turn them off before I enter. If I forget the first swing is WAY BEFORE you get to the brushes or other obstacles so you have plenty of time to turn them off.

Besides - it is a rare ocassion that I will take a $60,000 car through a carwash !!
