Problem with new tires. Need help.
Hello all,
This is my first post. I drive a 2010 328i X-drive and I have had it for about a year. I was running Conti Runflats until now with the usual issues that everyone complains about. Cutting to the chase...long story short I have 4 new Conti DWSs now. I read the reviews and didn't go in expecting a completely transformed car and yes, at this point that is true. Granted, it is much quieter and smoother at city speeds and reasonably good pavement at <50-60mph speed. The problem starts at around 70+ mph on the highway. The same tire which was smooth at slower speeds (and not as warmed up mind you) seems to be rough riding and more noisy on the highway. I get the higher noise, but rough? There seems to be kind of a rumble and roughness that is hard to describe and not something I was expecting. Even the runflats when they were new on the car did not have this issue on the highway and were actually really smooth. I cannot understand this and I am disappointed to have a new set of tires perform poorly. This is contrary to most reviews I have read. Yes, I have had them balanced and recently checked and balanced again at another shop where they found the tires to be balanced and correctly mounted. I don't believe they have found anything wrong with the tires. Some people mention in their reviews their tires are not exactly round etc. I am not sure that's even possible. The inflation on the tires is also according to BMW, perhaps +1 psi higher all around cold. I don't know what to do at this point. Please help with some ideas I can try out. Thanks a lot in advance. P.S: I have not had good luck with Continentals. This being my third set with the first set on a previous car. It is probably just me. |

Silly guess, but if they're directional, make sure they're on right.

New tires take a couple of hundred miles to break in. My Conti DW were feeling squirmy the first two weeks I had them. After driving to San Francisco and back for the on July4, the tires now feel perfect.

While I still have RFTs on my E91, I've covered about 11,000 miles on the DWS tires on my 128i 'vert. Except for a slightly mushy steering feel (but very good cornering traction), I have no issues whatsoever - including lengthy cruising at 80~85 mph with no noise or roughness. Recommended pressures for my car are 32/35 and I find 34/37 about ideal for the DWS tires.
Is it possible that you have developed some sort of vibration in your AWD system? (Grasping at straws here.) Tom |
