Fuel consumption suddenly improved by 6mpg

I was in the UK last weekend and made the most of being on a foreign plate to give the 330d some stick (100-125mph) on the relatively empty and straight Kent motorways. I also went past the 20000km (12500 miles) mark on the odometer.

Since I got back to France, my average fuel mileage has miraculously improved from 7.5 ltr/100km to 6.5 (UK: 36 to 44mpg, US 31 to 38mpg). I am not aware of driving any differently (apart from the high speed last weekend only), or of taking inhabitual routes since my return.

Do you think this is due to the engine's getting a work-out last weekend, or does the ECU alter its settings when the engine reaches 20000km

Just curious, I'm not complaining

Weird.....I remember hearing that deisels get better mileage with age. Don't know if that's true or not, but congrats on the mileage!!!

My 330d has certainly improved - getting consistent average now of 37mpg up from about 34mpg - same type of driving same routes etc..
The car has now done 31k, I noticed improvements from about 25k. I do tend to use the cruise control more now on motorways and I think that helps the fuel consumption.
It is actually surprising how much other drivers vary their speed on the motorway! It is really noticeable when you have the cruise on at a consistent speed.
Any problems with your car since it was remapped?

May be one of these

1) You may have burned the cylinders clean thanks to higher revs for long periods on the highways

2) You may still have UK diesel in the tank, and its better than whats available in france. A lower sulphur diesel will give you beter milage

Yes, I always smile to myself when the Fiesta that just delighted in overtaking me going down the hill subsequently can't maintain 80mph going back up the other side

No issues at all since the remap 8 months/8000km ago. Having 615 torques available, as Clarkson would say, is awesome - it makes the car feel like the e39 M5 I used to drive (400hp, but 'only' 500 torques )

Probably (1) as I didn't buy any fuel in the UK (too damned expensive!).

Diesel's fuel economy (and performance) will improve when you get more km. 20k km is hardly broken in.

Last summer I drove across the country... started trip with 7800 km on the clock and came back with just over 19,000 km on the clock. Fuel mileage in the city was dramatically improved and has remained so since then...

My 320D with ECU-chip has now passed 45000km and I can go 0,42l/10km. Previous I was more like 0,5l/10km. But its only 200hp and 400nm so its really slow.

Yes, it must be terrible having only as much torque as the 335i I wish my consumption was as low as yours, though!

ok - what do you pay for diesel in France?
Is petrol cheaper there also (taking the wife and her car -325 convertible to France in June for a week)?
Keep toying with getting a remap but I think I am going to hold out and aim to get a 335d later this year/early next year.

I´ll get 1300-1400km on every full tank on the slow diesel and my student economy likes that.

What does the dealership or BMW in general say about your car being chipped for more power? Does this automatically void your warranty? Or do they look the other way? Would it be any different with the 335i here in the states?

Diesel is currently €1 a litre here, petrol is about €1.20. I can understand your hesitation re. the remap, but the first thing I would do if I ever got a 335d would be to remap that as well>> 350hp & 700Nm

They look the other way. In fact, it was they who did the remap on my e39 530d 5 years ago

There is a thread in the UK section currently you may want to look at regarding chipping/remapping.

Wow, I never realized that taking the dead hookers out of the trunk would make that much difference in MPG.
