Does anyone know what is the difference between sport suspension (standard on 335i) and M Sport suspension (comes with M Sport pack)?

thanks

The M Sports suspension is even stiffer than the sports suspension and should in theory control body roll better and increase the car's ability to take corners.

Nope. Actually for the E92 that's wrong. The first E92's price list had the sport suspension listed as the only available suspension (which is a default option btw.). The new pricelist starting March simply replaced the sport suspension with the M suspension. They are in fact both the same (on this particular car). That's the info I have from BMW. The reason they changed the name was because people knew what M suspension was and thought sport suspension was a new thing and everybody kept asking. So they changed that to M suspension. Pre-March cars and Post-March cars (E92 tha is) all have the same suspension, they are just amed differently.

Hope that makes sense.

Correct. I confirm, both are the same thing and the car is lowered by 15mm in both cases.

Can this option be removed to make the car ride 15mm higher for comfort?

Especially on non Autobahn roads and the like the ride in the 335i with 19" wheels can be a little uncomfortable.

Any ideas?

Suspension differences

My Cab build is in 2 weeks and I have been in contact with BMW AG about the diferences.

Note the coupe/cab 335 in american spec comes with one suspension at this time, It is listed as Sport suspension. I will have info about suspension, part numbers, ride heights, and differences between the M and US Sport suspensions and German versions

This will be posted when I receive it

The suspension changed, there was regular suspension and sports suspension, then in sept 2006 the M-Sport suspension was revised.

If you drive a pre 9/2006 car it is very crashy and not a good ride at all, drive a car from 9/2006 on with the M-Sport suspension and it is completely transformed.

The M-Sport with 18's and Pilot Sport 2 run flats is the best riding BMW set up so far since they insisted on run flats. I have driven a 330d SE on 17's and it is terrible, very crashy and the back end skips out all the time.
I hated my 535d sport touring for the same reason and put proper tyres on that, we also have a 120d m-sport and have had to put proper tyres on that.

The new M-Sport suspension when combined with 18's is back to feeling like a BMW, it may be the PS2's though as I have not tried another one with a different tyre.

Part numbers, sports and M-Sports are not the same anymore for the sedan and the touring....

M SPORTS SUSPENSION
01 LEFT FRONT SPRING STRUT 1 from 09/2006 31318036553
01 FRONT RIGHT SPRING STRUT 1 from 09/2006 31318036554

Sports Suspension
01 LEFT FRONT SPRING STRUT 1 31316772923
01 FRONT RIGHT SPRING STRUT 1 31316772924

I would agree with you on the ride quality. Our M sport rides better than our previous two e46 sports ever did with less body as well.

I think all M sport e90s on 18s come with PS2s in the UK (now anyway).

Regards

Chris

Here is the real answer

On the E90/E91 there are 3 types of suspension
1)Normal
2)Sport
3)M Sport

For they E92 its a bit more complicated
the uncomplicated bit: There are 3 types
1)Normal
2)Sport
3)M Sport

The complicated bit is BMW doesnt offer the sport bit anymore on the E92, Since September 2006
They only offer Normal or M Sport
The 335i has M Sport standard now, used to have sport standard
The E92 sport also was hardly different to the M Sport.

The sport and M Sport suspension are the same height, but use different springs and damper rates and different anti roll bars

So to sum up
Currently available:
E90/E91
1)Normal
2)Sport
3)M Sport

E92
1)Normal
2)M Sport

Is it possible to order the normal suspension then because I noticed that the M Sports suspension is standard and is on my order but I am worried this may be a little too firm on the 19" 230's.

Any ideas thoughts or comments would be great.

The M-Sport is in a completely different league o the rest, yes it is firmer, but in a more progressive way. Just driving around it soaks up the bumps in teh road far better than the Standard suspension. Also you need to add bigger wheels for more comfort, I know that sounds bizzare, but the sidewalls on teh runflats are the problem, so less sidewall actually makes them more comfy.

My mum has an SE with 16" wheels and the ride on her car is verging on ridiculous compared to mine with M-Sport suspension and 18" wheels.

The best thing anyone can do for ride comfort is get the M-Sport suspension, even the Tech at BMW was amazed at this, we drove back to back in an SE with 17's and then got in mine and the difference is nothing short of amazing.

Thanks for the reply, so what you are saying is not to worry about the ride quality with the M-Sports suspension and the 230 19" wheels - is this correct?

If thats the case then I am happy and will leave my order untouched. I was just a little concerned after reading some of the posts on this forum.

Also in the test drive I took before ordering I found the 18" wheels and the suspension to offer a good compromise between good road handling and comfort I was just concerned about the larger wheels I ordered but after your view that the larger the better well lets just say I am starting to feel OK about this again.

Thanks again.

Cheers

Yes. Get another car. The 3 series is not a comfort car. You want a 5 series. Or Mercedes.

funkahdafi,

Do not really want a 5 series and certainly not a Mercedes. In my opinion the 3 series is a comfortable, well made and well engineered car. I think saying it is not a comfort car is incorrect but anyway.....

The question was more about the wheel size and the suspension but the question was answered anyway and now i am not concerned any longer.

Cheers

Totally disagree with that, my 335i has my 535d totally whipped for comfort.

I would definitely go with M-sport and 19" 225s. If you want a less rigid ride, swap out to non-rfts. Michelin PS2s are an excellent compromise between ride quality and performance.
