Manual vs Automatic Transmission
I would be curious how many of you have opted for Automatic Transmission and WHY?
I personnally prefer a manual transmission for a sports sedan like the 3-series BMW or Audi A4. I stronly believe this car is designed to be driven with manual transmission. On the other hand: if I would be in the market for a 7-series BMW I would probably opt for automatic transmission ...

alright, since you're a newbie, I won't dish out my usual dose of sarcastic bitchism.
Search for "automatic" or "manual" this forum is literally littered with tonnes of auto vs manual threads

The 7-series isn't offered with a manual transmission (regular or automated clutch). In fact the only car remotely in that class that is (unless I've missed anything) is the Maserati Quattroporte (the Cambiocorsa automated clutch transmission). Maserati have also just added a traditional ZF 6-speed auto as an option, which I'm sure will end up featuring in the lion's share of Quattroporte sales.

i am not looking for the pros and cons of manual and automatic transmission which has been covered extensively on the E90 US boards (I did my search before posting this) ..
this post was meant to be a kind of CANADIAN survey trying to find out what YOU guys are driving and what made you choose manual over automatic or vice versa ... oh well .. never mind .. this is now becoming a Maserati thread anyways ...

Tiptronic isn't bad. It just has some lag when it engages when switching gears.
Automatic can be driven by anyone, where manual if you risk a bad driver in your house they can burn your clutch or whatever. |

I have automatic, wanted the ease of mind and was impressed with the 335 auto when i drove it, shifts are faster than most auto's i have driven.
Oh and the paddle shifts are awesome, i find i drive with both hands on the steering wheel way more often, in fact i have never shifted with the stick and only the paddle shifters in this car.

Automatic w/ paddles -- though don't know that I'll use them that much. Car hasn't arrived yet. Went with the AT because it'll be a dd in the usual rushhour traffic. All my previous cars have been MT's and I'd go MT for a weekend-only car.

I test drove the auto 335 w/ sport package and it was nice, but I ordered the MT with sport package. I personally just love a manual transmission on a sport oriented car. The auto was better than I expected, though.
You can't go wrong with this car any way you order it. |

It's like asking people whether they like they coffee black or with milk/cream. There are two camps and each have their own reasons.
My guess is that if you buy the car off existing stock it is likely auto. If it is custom ordered it may be an even split.

My car was the only car on the entire lot with a manual tranny. It just happened to be in the exact colour (jet black) and optioned out (sport package only) exactly as I wanted it as well...

Manual all the way, even if tiptronic or DSG may be faster. Somehow, don't feel the same connection to the car without a manual. That's my 2cents.:rocks:

MT - there's 6 gears to play with. And this is from a guy who has to peddle down the DVP every morning..... but a slick change makes it all worthwhile. To each his/her own. Plus my kids can't drive stick...... heh.

Manual vs Automatic
There is nothing better than running through the gears on a twisting road, on a sunny day, but for the day to day grind in the city go with the automatic. I purchased the tiptronic w/paddle shifters and it is an absolute blast to run through the gears when I feel like it (and that's what I like - when I feel like it). There are times, when you're doing the 6ft hop of the 401 or DVP that you wish you had an automatic....
My 2 cents!! |

Manual....i wouldn't pay the money for a BMW with automatic transmission. I like to feel the power, the clutch, 6 speed, the real pleasure of driving a performance sedan when you have full control of it. Plus i'm the only one driving manual in my family...so nobody will mess with it

It was the only 335i available on the lot optioned the way I liked it. No manual tranny 335i were available. And I didn't want to order from factory... Hmm...I see a trend here... |

fun + fun + fun even when you dont want it to be = Manual
fun + easy + easy even when you dont want it to be = Automatic, I think a clutch gives the driver more options/freedom at the expense of the effort required No clutch means you follow orders at your own will, but you must follow orders... |
