Heres the spec http://www.pentosin.net/pressrelease...HighPerf_2.pdf
I know most go to dealer which is where bought my last oil change from or mobil one 0w40. I found the pentosin at almost half the price. |

I haven't used Pentosin oil, but I've used thier other fluids. If you're asking people to discuss oil types and opinions you're going to open a can of worms. People's opinions are all over the place. My advice has always been that most brand name oils that are synthetic and the right viscosity will be fine for your BMW. What matters is that you change it at the correct intervals.
I recently tried Lubi moly 10w60 GT1 oil for my S54, it is quite a bit cheaper than the Castrol TWS. Both Lubi moly and Pentosin are more well known in Europe.

Not sure if your car requires LL01 or LL98, but Pentosin makes oils that meet BMW specs. They are well regarded in Europe, so you should be fine as long as you stick with a BMW specification.

I have just changed the wife's 328iT with Pentosin 5w-30 High Performance Synthetic, LL-01 spec and the initial results are promising, an increase from 25.2 to 25.5mpg on her weekly commute.
I was using Motul 8100 XMAXX, but I thought I would try Pentosin and so far so good! |

It's well known in europe but tends to be expensive in th US when you have cheaper alternatives. I was going to buy some SP3 but it was about $11 liter.

The LL-01 Pentosin oil would be the 5W-30 one, in America you can not replace it with the LL-04 Pentosin 5w-40 because of fuel quality issues stick with the LL-01.

IIRC Mobil One is not LL-01 anymore due to a formula change.
I use Castrol Edge for all of our vehicles, meets LL-01 and the MB standard , and is normally around $23 bucks for 5qts with Amazon Prime. |

Itīs been 7 months since Iīve done my oil change with Pentosin 5W-30 (LL-01) and 5,800 miles and my oil level still ok, it shows me like 3/4 that means no refilling has been needed. This is one of those rare cases that you can find a product that is good, nice and cheap.

It's time to replace my oil and in order to serve the community I'm going to perform a new test, instead of purchasing Pentosin again now let's go premium and get Castrol Edge 0W-40 and MANN filter rather than the MAHLE one that was used last time.
With Pentosin 5W-30 (LL-01) and MAHLE oil filter I didn't have to refill oil in 7,500 miles and got 7 km per liter of gas efficiency, let's see what we get with Castrol Edge 0W-40 and MANN filter. The 40 grade Castrol oil use to be LL-01 certified I don't know if it still is but that's why I picked the w40 instead of w30 that has never been LL-01 certified. I know that km/l gas efficiency is hard to translate into mpg but I will report in porcentage that way it would be easier to compare, so far the order has been placed and the experience not that good because it's nearly 30% more expensive than the Pentosin and MAHLE option. My results Pentosin VS Castrol
As promised this would be the results that I got from using Castrol Edge 0W-40 (LL-01) and Pentosin 5W-30 (LL-01).
The car is a 2010 BMW 325I E90 N52 automatic. The behavior was very similar in both cases but there are some differences that might be important. - With both oils I didnīt have the need to refill but the Pentosin went down from full oil level to 3/4 in 6,250 miles and the Castrol went down to the same 3/4 of the level in 5,300 miles. - The driving experience was the same, I couldnīt tell one from the other. - The fuel consumption was different, as I told you here in Mexico we mesure in kms so in percentage Castrol gave me 4% more gas efficiency than Pentosin. With this simple results we might conclude that both oils are very similar but Pentosin might be a little more resistant to high temperatures because it took a little bit longer to burn than Castrol but that comes with a price MPG, so even though it supposed to be a thinner oil it seems to be thicker because of the resistance and the fuel consumption. There's some people that say that German products are overspec so they can be use safely with minor requirements, maybe this could be the case. When I started this analysis I thought Pentosin would be my choice but in my case I think Iīll go with Castrol, nevertheless Castrol is much more expensive here in Mexico the Price of fuel here is excessive like 55% more than in the US specialy Premium one, just with the saving of using Castrol I can pay the oil including the filter so itīs free every 7,500 miles and BMW recommends Castrol for their engines so it should be good enough. |
