A week and 700 miles in e90 335Xi

335Xi SB/Black Step, ZSP, ZCW, PDC

Note: I am sharing my personal impressions here and I do not insist I am right.

First impression under normal driving conditions there is no difference between 335i and 335Xi.
• I don’t feel any weight difference between them.
• Steering could be lighter but I am not sure, it is defiantly lighter than 325/330.
• Brakes are bigger and better (not that 325/330 had bad brakes)
• Without paying utmost attention and specifically looking for turbo lug I forget that there are turbos there. What is unforgettable is the power they produce.
• Car is very solid and quite but not overly so that you forget you are driving.
• Logic 7 has a very impressive sound and I do hear the difference with standard radio for 325/330 once I turn volume up. But if listening to music at low/background volume level they both sound more or less the same to me.

Now, once I started to push it a little bit – there is a pronounce difference between 335i and 335Xi
• Xi just rocket out of turns like a speeding bullet. While the car feels like RWD I could not force it to over steer (I am still going thru the break-in and pushing my ceiling up ever so slowly. Once I thru the break-in we will see). I did manage to push the corners and Xi is certainly extremely surefooted and faster than i.
• I did notice DSC/DTC working if I push 335i around. I don’t notice any interference from them in Xi even on a wet road.
• Launches and acceleration: it feels considerably faster. I’ve got no proof so take it a face value … or not – it is up to you. I am sure we’ll see some real numbers soon and will know for sure.

So far driving during my break-in and varying rpms/gears all the time I have 41.7mph average speed with 21.5mpg average gas consumption (never reset the computer yet) – much better than I expected. Car overall handling, insight and everything else is the same as any other 3 series as far as I can tell. The TT engine sounds different but very pleasant: smooth and mean at the same time, and I do hear turbos on higher rpms. The oil temp stays between 230 and 250 so far, going up and down all the time. My CA told me I have oil cooler but I don't see it looking thru lower grill on a passanger site there is solid plastic ... After starting car cold and after rpms go down to 600-800 range it is some what a rough idle until engine is fully worm. From time to time I do hear light valve tapping. Restarting the car always takes tapping away – is this some kind of fluke in a computer, I don’t know. May be it is just part of computer learning process but I doubt it – 700 miles should be enough I’d think.

Overall car is awesome and very much fun to drive. Sometimes I think it should be illegal to have so much fun . My only concern that car stays trouble free (usual small staff like rattles and such I am expecting and I am not concerned at all).

So far I installed clear bra, mudd guards and zaino my new ride. I'll be doing Huper Optic 35% tint in a month or so and looking for winter tires later.

Enjoy, drive safe and see you on the road,
Alex.

Garage List
Lunches and acceleration?? I really think that if you're going to mash on the long pedal, you should put the sandwich away.

But seriously - nice write up!!

Nice one, Alex - thanks for the write up. I'm still 3 weeks away from getting mine - going from an Accord to 335Xi should make for a nice contrast.

Very Nice... Up Here in the NorthWet, if I had known that there were AWDs coming in the 335 flavour I may have ordered a different car...

Finally someone who has driven one, thanks for the writeup. Mine is supposed to show up at the end of April, beginning of may. I have been dying to hear some driving impressions of the car, as I'm a bit nervous only having driven a 335i.

What are the tires on your 335xi sport package, I assume staggered setup right?

Hs pics show Style 159, which should be 225/45/17 all round

I thought he had the sport package, should be 18" wheels for sure. At least that's what I was told when I ordered my 335xi with ZSP. They better be 18" staggered as that's what I was told by the dealer.

That is right. Style 159 All-season Conti's. This is somewhat a mystery to me too because catalog show style 158 for 335Xi with Sport. There are two options for sport pack -- for $820 invoice you should get 158 with 225 17" and for another $400 or so you get 162 with 225 F/245 R - 18".

for those of you in the Central New Jersey area, OPEN ROAD BMW on rt. 1 in Edison actually had one build and delivered this past Saturday to be sold to whoever off-lot, and they are taking orders to have your very own 335xi built and delivered 6-8 weeks. I know only because I WAS about to order mine since I though it had a longer wait, but I still gotta wait for my lease to end in 8 months.

WTF @ break-ins longer than two or three hundred miles.

This isn't a 1960s diesel.

I think "break-in" options were discussed at length numerous times here and everywhere else ... I do my own version of break-in because I've done it before and I was happy with the results -- I don't need to be convinced nor do I want to convince anybody that I AM RIGHT AND THEY ARE ALL WRONG. I increase engine load slowly with mileage, vary rpms and gears all the time, use engine braking and acceleration all the time. First 300 miles take it easy: no hard launches, no stressing drive train too much, than I start to increase the load, raise rpms ever so slowly with every passing mile, if I jump to 4500 for example for a few seconds I go down to 2500 and stay around there for some time, stop the car and let it cool down from time to time. I calculate my break-in mileage in such increments that I'll be done and at full red line by 1200 - 1700 miles or so at which point I change oil. It does not contradict BMW suggested break-in version (not by much anyway ) and what is important I FEEL good about it.

You're perfectly right in that it's your car, and you can break it in however you feel is necessary.

Nowhere did I try to prove you, or myself, or anyone else, right or wrong.

But I'm also entirely entitled to feel the way I do.

Anyhow, enjoy her! She looks hot in black!

I think I'll defer to MsInfo on this. He's the first person to post having taken delivery of a 335xi and has posted the first review.

He's our leader.

335Xi w/ 18" wheels (style 162's)

For us up here in Canada, it's slightly different than in the US - we get the 18" style 162 rims when we order the sport package.

I mean, I'll know for sure when I see my car in another couple of weeks or so.

Looks great, but it also means you're buying another set of tires (and rims) for the winter as these tires will be next to useless in the snow - regardless of how many wheels are driving.
